  • Great NRO article by Paul Krugman ........ I don't think it is unusual for a guy like Krugman to talk about capital controls as a means, among others, for Turkey to dampen the current fiscal crisis. That sort of fiscal policy has been around for a long time with varying degrees of stigma or credit as circumstances historically dictated. Probably very appropriate to talk about it in the context of Turkey.

Will Erdogan adapt policies like that? Maybe. One of Krugman's implied points is that Erdogan would appear to be able to do this without appearing to kowtow to the US.

Hack, I know you have spent periods of extended time in Turkey. My time there has been limited to multiple short stays but I've loved that time and that spent with Turks themselves. It's been hard for me to watch that country slide into the political and economic morass it has become under Erdogan. I was cheering for the success of the coup when it went down. Today, it appears much less likely that another uprising to get rid of Erdogan could happen. But he is in deep shit politically, glad to see it, hope he continues down a defiant, lying road similar to Maduro in Venezuela but his rule is ended by popular uprising before it gets to the point Venezuela has reached.

    • The article was by Kevin Williamson who was quoting Paul Krugman...twice. Bizarre.

Baghdad Sarah read a presidential statement which, absolutely hilariously, attempts to portray Mr Brennan as Trump. (I have substituted "Trump" for "Brennan" in the statement excerpted below.)

"Mr. Trump's lying and recent conduct characterized by increasingly frenzied commentary is wholly inconsistent with access to the nation's most closely held secrets and facilitates the very aim of our adversaries, which is to sow division and chaos."

            • It's silly that national security officials keep their clearance for life, even after they move to private industry. Trump going solely after his critics as punishment is, of course, an abuse of power.

But that said, this is to take Omarosa out of the headlines. The White House's original pres release had a date of "July 26, 2018". They quickly took it down from the website and put a revised version up with today's date. They say "oops a silly mistake". Nearly every experienced reporter thinks they were simply waiting for an opportune time for a "let's change the subject" moment.

                    • Turks made their bed, and have to lie in it, and it's a damn shame. It's also unfortunate that Trump blurted what he did at that time. Just when Erdogan was losing credibility in his campaign to scapegoat the US, Trump gave him what he needed. If I were Erdogan I would have paid good money for that tweet.

The NRO doesn't have to lie in its bed though, nor does the IMF. They can quietly back off the Washington Consensus, never admit that policies they thought would work did not, and move on. A clean break would be better for the economic policy of all, but we're not going to get that. For alert readers, however, the sudden appreciation of Krugman is an invitation to think about what we know and believe about economic policy. Pretty big clue right there.

                      • Keeping/maintaining sec. clearance post public/military service is pretty standard.

                        great incentive for armed forces.

Brenan thinks Trump is a joke and doesn't mind saying it.

even without a security clearance, if someone had to stake their career/integrity on one or the other -- I can't imagine the pool opting for Trump would extend beyond his immediate sphere of influence.

except, of course, the faux patriot supporters who allude to putting skin in the game, but only explicitly demonstrate their moments of action or authority with small and irrelevant spousal anecdotes. #winning.

                          • no frigging way is the economy/the jobs situation/north korea/isis/nato/iran/immigration/trade going to be altered for the good of this nation--- if queen Hillary of the deepstate got elected.

for all the pettiness and thinskinned crybaby fits this president has--- economically/internationally he is everything this country needs

but I'm sure in coming generations the Make America Fokked Again agenda will find its way to the oval office

thankfully you all have shifted far left with your ban ICE, socialist/impeach trump agenda which hopefully keeps him in office in 2020

Seems that their issue is that the Mormom "Word of Wisdom" prohibits recreational 'stimulants' (ie drugs). So by allowing medicinal weed, it will open the door to recreational use, which is against their social tenets. So basically don't allow a door to be installed.

I don't see a leg to stand on. You aren't being forced to consume, medically or recreationally. If you're morally against it, don't indulge. Islam prohibits alcohol consumption, yet there are no Muslim activists trying to bring back prohibition. If you don't like the proposal, simply go out and vote no.

Addressing problems only when they are brought to the attention of DOJ leadership isn’t enough: The FBI needs to get serious about cleaning house.

the scary part is half this board is willing to let the fbi/cia/counterintelligence agencies rig an election if it meant trump wouldn't be president
