    • What this whole affair reflects is the decline in moral and ethical rectitude that has characterized the first decade of this Millennium.

Exception taken. It's just that we know about it now. Stuff like this has been ongoing for plenty longer than the last 12 years. Most of the actual acts in question in this specific case happened longer ago then that.

It may be that the consequences of decisions taken long ago, such as the need to serve an institution's power and the need to establish and protect a brand, are felt in particular right now. This problem is a problem created and nurtured by people who were living fossils long before the decade in question.

Would it be fair to say this is some of the last vestiges of the classic Good Ole Boy network?

          • Joepa had pretty much unrestricted powers at PSU. He clearly knew something was inappropriate (in the very LEAST) yet he found it more important to protect the PSU "family" than to protect vulnerable kids.

            Absolutely sickening.

            • This whole thing is just a terrible situation. It looks like all involved showed concern for Sandusky, but showed no concern for the victims.

              • I don't think is was truly a concern for Sandusky. It was an overriding concern for the program and the school's reputation. They let it go on for another 14 years without doing a single thing to stop it.

                  lol...seriously.

Last time I checked, all the major actors in the Penn State drama were at least 60 years old. Jeff's generation. Reflective of the decline of morality in the last decade?

                  • The selfishness that has permeated this Country in this Millenium is quite different, and quite noticeable. Any facade of doing something for the greater good is long gone. We can't even raise taxes to fix the damn highways.....

                    • ........... Pretty much what I'm referring to here.

Leading generations need to set an example for subsequent ones. The success and survival of our nation depends on that.

Among this decade's, high profile bad actors, my observation leads me to believe most of them are over 50 ..... that puts them among the baby boomers.
There is such a thing as redemption. Jim Harbaugh is redeemed at the expense of a fading Ryan Day and OSU. M wins back to back games v. OSU first time since 1999-2000 - John Cooper was fired in 2000!!!

                      • I don't think you can blame any particular age group. Agreed that the idea of the greater good seems to be slipping away, but no one adult demographic seems particularly responsible or not responsible...

Actually this is classic old school "How to deal with predators/deviants in your organization". Quietly attempt a weak move, hope it stops, and try to keep it out of the public eye.

New school damage control is to admit it up front, apologize profusely, take strong measures to prevent reoccurance.

The diminshment of the greater good concept is too broad a brush to paint this one with.

But not before exhausting every attempt to keep it hidden and then some transparent denials.

                              • Because it's a more specific case reaction that has been so common in the past. These trypes of cases were never dealt with harshly and upfront in the past. This is not a new reaction for this.
