ALLEN PARK - Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz didn't break out the dreaded and worn-out "the sky is falling'' routine during his comments this morning on the eve of training camp.

Schwartz made three points during his 30-minute press conference that were a pleasant departure from previous head coaches.

First, Schwartz didn't act like an unsigned rookie missing a few days of camp would signal the end of the world. While Schwartz believes running back Jahvid Best should be signed relatively soon, he's bracing for the possibility that defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh might miss a day or two - or three.

"An extended period of time that he would miss would be significant. Missing a few days here or there, it's part of this business,'' Schwartz said. "Guys deal with injuries, guys deal with all kinds of different things. I don't think that would set him back. An extended period would definitely set him back.''

Schwartz is right. Anything after five or six days would be "extended.'' A few days isn't a big deal.

In the past, coaches acted like missing the first meeting of camp could let to catastrophic problems.

Second, Schwartz continued to say that the Lions don't have any set philosophy going into camp and he'll allow the talent to dictate what they do on the field. Now, the coaching staff obviously has an idea of what direction they're headed but, if it turns out that some of their plans aren't possible because of talent shortcomings, they'll change course. They won't try to hammer a square peg into a round hole.

And, finally, Schwartz - whether he meant to or not - acknowledged that the Lions aren't a very good team. Schwartz was asked a question about when the Lions would move from a "rebuilding'' team to a squad that would concentrate on just winning.
Schwartz said that all teams have to re-tool during the off-season.

During his answer, Schwartz said, "We won two games last year. We won zero the year before. We still have work to do. We haven't gotten to the point that we're satisfied with where the roster is. Even when we're a good team, I don't know that we'll ever reach a point that we're satisfied with where the roster is.''

One more time.

"Even when we're a good team ...''

It's refreshing to hear a head coach acknowledge the team was bad in the past and they still have some challenges in front of them. It's the truth and he's dealing with it. Lions fans have to appreciate that kind of straightforward comment than some cheerleading pep talk designed to fire up the fan base -- but only results in a collective eye roll.

I actually feel sad watching this, because it just drives home the point of how far fetched it is.

Yeah, I felt sad as well.
This video ( YouTube- Madden 11 Lions Super Bowl Celebration ) was good until the 1:52 - 2:20 part. Seeing "his" name on a #44 jersey (Jahvid Best's jersey) made me mad.
But again, I said 2-3 months ago on this Forum that Gus Johnson would make this game a lot Better.

Good article on Schwartz. I think it is mostly spot on. I have a lot of confidence in his coaching ability and saavy.

I'm not sure I can trust his saavy because I'm not really sure what that is.

Gus Johnson is enough of a reason not to buy that game for me. He's fucking annoying.

I went to high school with Chris. He's a good guy.

I haven't read much of his stuff so I can't pass judgment on his writing, though.

the links are fine.

Suh has a good head on his shoulders, you can bet he wants to be at camp with his new teammates.

I really never can understand why people use these fake small url's. I know that half the time they go to legit sites. But I can't understand why use them instead of the real urls.

I think it might be an ad counter thing... someone goes around and makes a bunch of accounts for any forum they can find and auto spams related articles based on keywords. Just a guess though.

Might be an ad strategy of foxsports.net too. The shortened specific links will tell them if its working by counting traffic and where its coming from.

They should have hidden their agenda better. Like this.

Also if you want to include a URL in a tweet or facebook status, sometimes it's makes more sense to use a shorten address.

Negotiations are slow because his agents are asking first pick money, If I am Lions brass, I say every day out of camp makes him a lesser player, thus less valuable to the team, and deserved of a smaller contract. When is this going to stop, a rookie who has never played a down is worth more than most proven players out there? Owners need to take a stand, the commish is behind them on this matter.
