        If Stafford is making the franchise pots of dough, where the Fk is that Vincent Lombardi shiny thing?

        I'm guessing it's all about the draft......., but I need to go to college to learn how that shit works.
        Lets put this into Soccer terms.

        How much does the guy who puts the ball in the back of the net (striker)get?
        In relation to the guy who runs the show (playmaker)?
        In relation to the guy who keeps the other team from doing the same (Defender)?

        In football terms:

        Striker = QB
        Playmaker = WR
        Defender = rest of the team

        Essentially, the QB is the guy who puts the ball in the net in Soccer - he's paid a kings ransom whether he does or doesn't once he gets that contract.

        • Wouldn't the qb be the playmaker and the wr be the striker, since the wr is the one who actually scores t he touchdown?

            As you already know, soccer is much more larger with multiple leagues. On top of the many leagues with various trophies , they also have international tournaments to build a resume, accolades and trophies.

            Nfl is just one single league and one trophy with no international play with even more trophies.

              I know all of the above buddy......, all the Hibs players are on different wage structures; it's the nature of the game. That's not really what I asked. Was asking why the "history" is absolute shit.

              419, no doubt nearer to the point. Agreed, there is only one tournament, (the NFL season) and with all teams focussing on it, harder to achieve.

              But I still can't quite get why, if players like Stafford are making tons of cash for the franchise, (and Baz Sanders in the past) why the Lions are consistently mediocre. The feckin Buccaneers even won a SuperBowl one year.

              • There are two ways to win a Super Bowl: a dynamic offense led by a quarterback playing at an elite level with at least an average defense...

                or a dynamic defense (85 Bears, 02 Bucs, 00 and 12 Ravens, last year's Broncos) with a solid running game.

                Before Stafford, the Lions have never had a qb capable of being elite enough to carry the team on their back, and for the most part the defense has been shit for decades. Factor in ownership not giving a fuck and that's not exactly a recipe for success.

                • Winning a SB? Just win a f'ing playoff game or two. One and done won't be tolerated anymore

                  • There's plenty of overpaid soccer players who have never won anything.
                    We have about 20 of them in the Forest squad at the moment!!!

                    My uneducated take;

                    I think the difference is in soccer success breeds success, you win you get more cash, qualify for European comps, attract better players, get paid more. The better players move to the more successful teams to play in the bigger comps, get better sponsor deals etc..

                    NFL is different, a closed shop, money spread reasonably equally and it has to be spent.

                    So if you have poor management giving stacks of cash to underperforming players (I don't include Stafford here) then you end up like the lions.

                      Excellent post. Also don't forgot teams are encouraged to spend to their salary cap, and the players do have a union, so it's quite socialist in that respect.

                      There is also a team salary floor but from what I've read it's somewhat variable.

                      • Thanks for the responses, but I think FVD hit the nail on the head....... "Ownership not giving a fuck"......, that'll no doubt be the reason.

                        And Cleggy......, when are the great Nottingham Forest going to get back to the top flight, where they belong?

                          Marko as the Hollies once sang "The road is loooong....."

                          Soccer is in a shit state, money drives everything, its a business not a sport anymore.

                          It looks like Forest are about to be taken over by a JJ Moores led consortium - whether that is a good thing or a bad thing only time will tell. (I think we were 3rd choice after Everton & Swansea so he must have some cash burning a hole in his pocket)

                          What's the opinion of him in the US?

                              Salaries are based on revenue generation, it's a fucking business.
