I would say in regards to Serena Williams is the times where she has had on court altercations with the judges it has been quite shocking in its viciousness. There is that little strain of McEnroe in her, She is normally pretty classy in defeat but she was in the wrong here even if the judge was being stupid. You can't demand an apology, it's not logical. But still it is shocking when she goes that way, sometimes you can't turn off the edge.
Serena's biggest problem is that she plays a sport where an angry tirade can be caught fully on camera and on microphone. Same with John MacEnroe. What either of them said is likely very tame compared to the tongue lashings that football coaches regularly give to refs. But unfortunately for tennis players, those brief moments where their emotions get the best of them get immortalized. So thank God there is no live mic at my house during Michigan sports events.
My wife was a college athletic trainer and she working a game at Crisler probably 25 years ago. They were playing Michigan in an televised game, the ref made a bad call and one of her friends was in the stands. The crowd was quiet when he screamed at the ref, "You and your wife suck!!!" Everyone heard it in the arena and on TV and all of the fans in Crisler booed him for a long time. The kicker to the story is the guy is himself a ref, he's been a ref for 30 years.
