  • Remember Loverboy's context. This was part of what came out post-disco. There has always been that niche for very commercial groups that may have had rock beginnings. Loverboy, Survivor, Foreigner, etc.

Yeah, maybe it was from a period when "commercial" took over rock, but it is what it is---and much better than the disco of the late 70's-early 80's. Some groups, like Loverboy, Foreigner, Survivor, etc, took advantage of the vacuum created by disco, others, such as Devo, thrived by taking advantage of the backlash against that very same commercialism.

    • Just in case Liney still doesn't recognize Loverboy, here's more:

Don't get me wrong, I was never a big fan of theirs, never liked the "pretty boy" image (reminded me too much of other "pretty boy" groups such as Duran Duran", but their stuff has held up pretty well against the hands of time.

      • And of course these guys also set the table for the grunge sound to come in as a backlash.

          • And then there was the original master of the backlash, Frank Zappa, who lampooned pretty much every genre of music that was around over the course of his career.

Not to mention that he was one of the best ever on the guitar:

Very early Zappa as a guest on Steve Allen.

                • Are you a fan of FZ, too, Dennis? The man was an f'n genius, saw him in concert twice. Just amazing stuff he came up with, most people just didn't get it when it came to all things Zappa

                  • Parts 2 and 3 over there too. I liked Zappa okay but small doses were enough for me. And 4.

                          • that clip of FZ on Steve Allen--it ended just as it was getting good, I'll go to youtube to retrieve part 2. But one thing I noticed as the interview went on, Allen seemed very condescending towards Zappa, and Zappa seemed to catch on, and in turn got the better of Allen, who was too dumb to realize it!
