Well Tulsi and Pete both actually served in Iraq, so they can say what they want in my book...but that said, Tulsi is also a major apologist for Assad. Her stance on fighting terrorism vs. attacking nation-states is weird and hard to follow.. So whatever she said wouldn't surprise me. I'll try to see what Pete said.

I'll just say Iran isn't North Korea. The people aren't brain-washed to anywhere near the same degree. They have a lot more exposure to the outside world. There are already large protests against the Ayatollah over the airline being shot down, which killed more Iranians than anyone else.Comment

Unless the military sides with the protesters, it won't amount to much. Any popular revolt against autocratic regimes needs the support of the military. Even with that it's not a given.Comment

In more bad press the Iranians are dealing with today, the British Ambassador to Iran was arrested and charged with being an unknown foreigner in an illegal gathering and abetting the organization of said gathering. The gathering was a government published event that was said to mourn for the lives lost in the 737 shoot-down. Apparently it turned into a protest against Khamanei and the "toughs" moved in to disperse it ....... it took about 15 minutes for Iranian authorities to recognize their blunder and he was released. Too late, his illegal arrest is headlines this morning. One fuck-up after another. The British Foreign Office released this statement:
"The Iranian Government is at a cross-roads moment. It can continue its march towards pariah status with all the political and economic isolation that entails, or take steps to deescalate tensions and engage in a diplomatic path forwards."

Here we go. Al Jeseera is reporting several rockets hit Al Asad in Iraq a few hours ago. There is a US presence there but it is advisers and technical support only. No troops or aircraft. zFour Iraqu soldiers standing guard there were injured when a "shell" hit the gate area. No one has claimed responsibility.
This is the kind of stuff that is going to continue. It's coming from the Military (IRG) with the approval from the Mullahs I would think. The Iraqis have already official said they don't want Iraq to turn inot a battle ground (between the US and Iran) but that is exactly what will transpire as Iran's goal is to rid Iraq of US military presence and the Trump administration has made it public that they told Iraq, no way, STFU and sit down. You owe us.
Well, that last part is debatable - IOW, I'm not sure Iraq owes the US much after the disaster that has been post Saddam Iraq.

Wanting democracy with every fiber of the people's souls is quite different than wanting to shake off shackles because of the economy or outside political pressures. You can't reasonably just toss people from a repressive structured society into what sometimes seems like unstructured chaos. Societies, like stock markets, despise chaos. Toss in heart felt religious chasms and you get, well, Iraq. It won't be but a couple of years until another strongman appears and people start questioning why were we there anyway if the cycle is going to go full circle anyway.
