  • Columbus/Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories developed a new corona-test device that provides results in minutes and will launch it this week. They are planning to supply 50,000 kits per day starting April 1. Abbott also has a test that takes a little longer. Between the two tests they expect to provide 5M tests per month.

                • Most of you have probably heard of this story by now but here it is in you didn't. One funeral home in Wuhan ordered two shipments of 5,000 funerary urns over a two-day period, raising new questions about the accuracy of China's official statistics.

Massive deliveries of urns in Wuhan have raised fresh skepticism of China’s coronavirus reporting. As families in the central Chinese city began picking up the cremated ashes of those who have died…

And there are still people carrying water for those fucks. You know, the US situation is what it is. And it's not good. No where is good and the US is certainly bad and getting worse. That stands on its own. But, anyone making the relative comparison -- US sucks/China great -- can go fuck themselves. Those people are exposing themselves for what they are.

                          • Took a break ..... I know you'all missed my posts......at least the few that might have read them .

On the mask thing. Science still indicates healthy individuals wearing masks is not likely to significantly reduce reduce R0. However, the combination of physical distancing, hand washing and masks is better at reducing R0 than any one of those things done independent of the other.

One of the primary benefits, according to Asian countries that overwhelming recommended masks for all, is psychological .... get's everyone acting together.

                            • In other news:

Monroe County in Fl, which includes the Keys south of Marathon key, has prohibited anyone not a resident or employed in an essential business, from entering. This is easy to do. Only one road, US1, allows you to get there. State Police and Monroe Co. Sheriff have a road-block set up and turned hundreds away since Thursday at 7am.

FLHP is doing spot pull-overs of vehicles with out of state license plates, driving East bound on Interstate 10. I10 connects the pan-handle and Louisiana with central Florida. They are asking a set of screening questions, issuing a quarantine order as appropriate - I did not see any plan to follow-up on these people. However, I am aware of several efforts to boot-strap existing software that has various levels of tracking capability to facilitate, on a wide scale, typical infectious disease tracking functions for COVID-19. Governments are being circumspect about answering questions about this (see below).

The success of mitigating, containing, testing and tracking COVID-19 + citizens of China, SK, Japan, SIngapore and Hong Kong compared to others is due, possibly in large part, to the application of tracking apps in personal cell phones adapted to perform tracking tasks. Privacy advocates are in an uproar about this and the issue has prompted a serious debate over choices between containment of the virus and privacy rights. I don't have a solid position on this subject ..... yet. We do know that control of the virus depends on testing, isolation where appropriate and or tracking of infected persons.

The amount of misleading or flat out wrong information in the public sphere about COVID-19 is staggering. For example, mid-week, a video of an alleged renown pulmonologist speaking to a group of MDs stated that taking Ibuprofen increased the severity of COVID-19 cases by 10X. His recommendation was to not take it under any circumstances. The facts: the evidence for Ibuprofen negatively affecting the course of COVID-19 infected patients came from China and France and is anecdotal. There are insufficient studies to support a blanket statement recommending against the use of Ibuprofen. There are other studies both small scale and anecdotal that contradict the recommendation not to use it. Bottom line: Ibuprofen can be safely administered to COVID-19 infected patients who would benefit.

Good article in the Economist this week on the huge amount of government intervention (take-over, if you wish) of our lives unprecedented since WWII. The thrust of the argument in the article was that governments are slow to give up what they take.

Finally, I want to give credit to AA for saying very early in the pandemic this thing won't be under control until there is a vaccine. Period. I've read nothing to reputably or convincingly state otherwise. The implications of this reality - a 12 to 18 month global crisis dealing with it - are obviously significant on multiple levels.

                              • ...... one more thing worth mentioning and Froot will appreciate this. I have an MD friend of mine whose wife is a nurse working on the front lines in Ventura Co. CA. The hospital system she is working in has a policy that employees must report high risk contact exposure to COVID-19 patients. If a fever presents, they are to self isolate at home.

My friend wrote a letter to the hospital administrator questioning the policy. His point was that by sending potentially COVID-19 + employees back to their homes, isolation or not and there is no testing, reporting or tracking policies in place, is seeding the infection in the community. Moreover, the hospital will quickly run out of front line staff.

His recommendation? Isolate in place. That means using the hospital or temporary shelters adjacent to them (we call them tent cities in USMC vernacular) to house this cohort. Test everyone of them. COVID_19 + employees who are asymptomatic, have mild symptoms and are not disabled, return to work. Those employees who actually tested + and either had no symptoms at all, mild symptoms or recovered, administer titers to determine viral status. Much more of great value to working the problem can be done from that information.
