  • There's one theory that's been around since November that a lot of those RINOs couldn't punish Trump in 2018 because he wasn't on the ticket. So they took it out on Congress instead. Democrats gain 40 seats. But then in 2020, Trump WAS on the ballot. Republicans do quite well in Congress, but lose Presidency.

Doesn't explain last night though. Maybe a combination of

    1) There's a small portion of MAGAland that only votes when Trump himself is on the ticket
    2) Trump's personal message was "The system's rigged. Now go vote!"
    3) Very debatable how much influence the true nutjobs have, but Lin Wood and the QAnon people were actively discouraging people from voting. Wood called Loeffler and Perdue 'communist stooges' who didn't have Trump's back.

Leaving aside "biggest" -- it's certainly a huge challenge. It's a challenge made even harder by outright censorship. So, yeah. That's going to be extremely difficult to combat. And, ultimately, it pretty much rots out the US from within.

Betsy DeVoss, god bless her, did her best.

          (4) It's the only race on the slate and Ds were desperate to win it and Ds massively outspent the Rs with help from gads of outside money. It was Beto-Cruz in a purple state.
          (5) PDJT turned the race into "voter fraud" instead of "save the Senate".

I don't know if Ossof will beat Perdue by more than Perdue beat Ossof. That will be a nice little bit of trivia. But, it's certainly close enough to suggest that a multitude of factors played a role.

The fact that the Dems are in control of the government despite being loaded down with platforms that are wildly unpopular with the American electorate speaks volumes about how worthless the Republican Party is. You even acknowledge this unpopularity yourself when you say that there will be a big backlash in 2022 because the Democrats will expose themselves.

Here's a thought -- if we had something remotely resembling a functional Republican Party, that type of exposure wouldn't be necessary, because the Rs would actually confront their political enemies instead of apologizing to them. But right now the only way for Republicans to get elected is for the electorate to find out the hard way that people like me are telling the truth about the Democrat agenda. Then, they get disgusted and vote them out in favor of Republicans who make empty promises to reverse the damage. And they never do. And then when they get elected President, they appoint shitty justices like John Roberts. The courts have been an unrelenting instrument of the Left for 50 years despite Republicans having actually appointed a majority of the USSC justices. The Republicans absolutely hate their constituents and their worthlessness in representing their voters cannot possibly be overstated.

The last Republican movement to legitimately move the football was the Contract with America and the Newt Gingrich days. It has been a 20 year losing streak since then, regardless of the electoral results. The Democrats will be mandating puberty blockers for kids in 10 years, and the Republicans will sign on another 10 years after that.

                • Just saw report that Biden’s choosing Merrick Garland for AG. He’ll have no problem being confirmed and now, with 50 votes, can replace him on the court with less trouble.

I guess the Rs are the SEC team that's not in the playoffs of the political world. They just didn't want to be there

The Rs have their big tent issues -- Buckley/NR folks; libertarians/tea party folks; social issue folks; Trumpists. Those don't necessarily mix well except when unified against a bad idea. The Ds have huge big tent problems, too, but PDJT, for the time being, was able to unify them.

One problem the Rs have is that they are generally (in theory) not for solving every problem with the Federal Government. However, Americans sort of want the Federal Government to fix everything, so it's not enough to say that the Ds proposal is a really bad idea, you have to offer up your own solution. You just can't say that the Feds shouldn't do it. Period. Or rather, the Rs don't say that or have hard time maintaining that initial positions and then end up, as you would point out, supporting some watered down version of the god-awful D policy.

                          • The reason why the GOP cannot get what hannibal thinks are empty promises enacted is because they don't have the numbers in legislation. Mot likely they will never have sufficient numbers to get what he wants to get enacted. hannibal is continually setting himself up for disappointment. The system more or less is set up for incrementalism, these huge sweeping changes are not coning for the left or the right.

Barack Obama got the ACA through with 60 senators and it was half a loaf of something that the Democratic party has been trying to get enacted since Harry Truman was in office.

You want to rip on McCain, you have two Senators in Arizona that were GOP members they are now member of the Democratic party. If you kick them out of your party, you won't have the numbers.

                              • I have noticed lately that there has been a re-surge in Fake News stories that focus on the danger of Covid-19 to young people.

Those 75 and older still account for 6.9% of the population and 59.3% of the deaths. Nothing at all has changed on that front.

In my town, grades 6-12 are still 100% remote learning. Or shall I say, "learning". Grades K-5 are two in-person days a week.
