    • The only ones who really got penalized for steroid use were the ones who used it and got the absolute best results. Nobody says much about guys like Jason Giambi or Luis Gonzalez. Gonzalez is a hero for that game winning RBI against the Yanks.

You are fooling yourself if you think playing weren't using PEDs in the 60s and 70s. Steroids weren't invented in 1995. A good rule of thumb is if it gives you an advantage you can be sure the athlete will take it given the opportunity.

      • Thought 60's and 70's players were mainly popping amphetamines. 80's players snorted mountains of cocaine.

        • Yeah, you're kidding yourself if you think sterioids was some sort of problem in baseball in the 60s and 70s. 80s? It definitely starts working its way into the game.

But, for a long, long time baseball orthodoxy held that things like lifting weights weren't good for your swing. Not only were steroids not particularly easy to come by (especially relative to the 90s/00s), there wasn't much incentive to try to come by them.

          • The 1973 congressional investigation was on amphetamines and steroids and it found that it was used at an alarming level, but he didn't want to parade witnesses in front of the public so the issue went largely unaddressed. Tom House suggested a lot of pitchers were using steroids. He claimed he used anything he could get his hands on.

            • Whatever early versions of steroids that may have been in circulation in the 70s fails in comparison to what was developed in the 90s and 00s.

              • Maybe, but just remember if they could get an edge they would and it didn't start in 1995. It goes back to my original point, the ones who got penalized the most were the ones who applied the edge to its fullest extent.

They chose not to make a big stink about it in 1973, so the Mitchell Report devotes half a page to it. The baseball writers that feigned outrage in the 2000s we're also shocked there was gambling going on at Rick's American Cafe.

Cocaine was especially popular in the NBA.

                        • The Braves are on track to lose every key member of the WS championship team. Somewhere along the line, we became the Marlins.

                          • Also, next Friday I go and see the Savannah Bananas. They are the quirky Harlem Globetrotters of minor league baseball. Worth a look on YouTube if interested.

You got that title, that's a that matters even if you have a few losing seasons.

Not quite,. Braves traded for Matt Olson and signed him to a 6 year deal. That will offset Freeman's loss a good deal. Also picked up Kenley today to deepen their bullpen (plus will have a healthy Kirby Yates). Acuna is probably back within the first month of the season that is huge.
