Sorry - I should have said, "never would have gone out of his way." When he turned 50, a few of his kids tricked him into getting on a plane and tossed him out. He's that kind of guy.. can't help but love him.... today I got up after three hours of sleep (midnight shift) made a large roaster full of chicken and dumplings and took them over to a group of vets (all over 80 years old) and spent a couple hours chatting with them.. great stories and a great time together.

Since we're on the subject of places to stay albeit at entirely different elevations, anyone have recommendations on where to stay in New Orleans that is close to the action, somewhat safe, and nice without too high a price tag?
Romster, I didn't answer this at first because I thought you would get a better answer than what I am about to give you. I was in New Orleans a lot in the late 70's but that was mostly in the Kenner area and I just found the cheapest place I could find. On one visit I was treated to 9 inches of rain in 3 hours, but that is a different story.
About the only thing I could offer that is much more recent is that I stayed at the Embassy Suites Hotel - New Orleans Convention Center. It is on Julia street. The rooms were fine and the breakfast very yummy. It is in an ideal location to the convention center, but also not far from the French Quarter. We easily walked there, and you walk by a Harrah's casino on the way. We ate at Brennans (Bananas Foster!) and Emeril's (White Truffle soup to die for). If that sounds like I have some idea about fancy food, don't let me fools you. I don't, but the folks I traveled with were more culturally advanced than I, and I tagged along. I never would have darkened those doorways on my own, trust me on that.
Anyway, there is a walking ghost tour that starts in the French Quarter and it was loads of fun and very informative. I learned that New Orleans was originally populated by french criminals and prostitutes. At the halfway point we visited a vampire bar, and I took a wizz in a bathroom that I found out later was often haunted by some poor schmo that was murdered in it. It did have a bit of a draft in there. There are some real diabolical people in New Orleans history.
Anyway, I haven't been to New Orleans in about 7 or 8 years so I don't know if this is still a good hotel since Katrina hit. Good luck with your trip!

Rom- I have a friend that used to go quite often to New Orleans.. he told me it is a fantastic and fun place to visit, however, when traveling on foot during the evening one block the wrong way and you would wish you never heard of the place...if you go have fun......but always be diligent about your safety..

All my buds are nearly 85 and their health is starting to go except for one guy that was airborne and did that little jump back in 44 on the sixth of june... Talk about quick witted, and I think he could still kick my ass...if I could just get hold of his walker first..........
