  • "Thanks Dano, Yooper Power."
-------------------------Always my friend. I remember the first year "Yooper" teams were allowed to compete in the "state" championship. Prior to that we were a bunch of hicks/farmers who didn't know how to play football and weren't considered real football teams. We showed well and have ever since. We also have better fans.

      • NYPD officer photographed giving boots to barefoot homeless man melts icy hearts online

By Dylan Stableford, Yahoo! News | The Lookout – 5 hrs ago

A New York City police officer is photographed giving boots to a homeless man on Nov. 14. (NYPD/Facebook)
A photo of a New York City police officer kneeling down to give a barefoot homeless man in Times Square a pair of boots on a cold November night is melting even the iciest New Yorkers' hearts online.
On Nov. 14, NYPD officer Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square, saw the older homeless man without shoes sitting on 42nd Street. DePrimo, 25, left and then returned with a pair of $100 boots he bought at a nearby Skechers store.
"It was freezing out, and you could see the blisters on the man's feet," DePrimo, a three-year veteran of the department who lives with his parents on Long Island, told the New York Times. "I had two pairs of socks, and I was still cold."
The random act of kindness was captured by Jennifer Foster, a tourist from Florence, Ariz., who was visiting the city. Foster, communications director for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Arizona, emailed the photo to the NYPD with a note commending DePrimo.
"The officer said, 'I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let's put them on and take care of you,'" Foster wrote. "The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man.
"I have been in law enforcement for 17 years," she continued. "I was never so impressed in my life. ... It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost."
Foster's photo was posted on the NYPD's Facebook page on Tuesday, where it received more than 320,000 "likes," 77,000 "shares" and 20,000 comments—most of them praising DePrimo, who seems to have restored Facebook's faith in humanity.
"This is one hell of a police officer," Desiree Wright-Borden wrote.
"Wow," Jack Horton wrote. "It's nice to know there are still good people out there."
"Angels truly do walk on earth!!!" Charlene Hoffman-Pestell wrote.
Some commenters, though, were skeptical, saying the photo could have been staged.
"Clever stunt!" Louis Zehmke wrote. "The hobo is 'parked' at the entrance of a shoe shop."
But Foster claims DePrimo had no idea he was being photographed: "The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching."

            • I'm surprised he hasn't been suspended, or at least reprimanded, for using "duty" time to shop for this man. That's a poignant and great story and all but who was doing his job while he was shopping? That sounds cold but he has a job to perform for a reason. What if some vigilante went off while he was absent. Wouldn't look so good now would it. He should have told the man he would return with boots after his shift.

              • Pretty soon every dang cop in NYC will be spending 75 bucks on the homeless instead of doing their job!

                  OMG!

I can see them wanting to be able to get reimbursed for doing their job and protecting the public!

                  Taxpayers beware!:-):-)

----------------------Make light of it but if it turned bad and he wasn't there the NYPD would be taking HUGE criticism. I worked for the public sector. It's a catch 22. He did a GREAT thing but he left his position and left the department at a huge risk.

                    • He might have done this on his break, DanO. Maybe he asked his partner to fill in for him while he did it. It's hard to say without knowing how many other officers were stationed in the area and/or what their duties were that night.

                      • Furthermore, don't cops ever go into stores just to show a presence and be a deterrent? Who's to say being in the store wasn't something he would do as part of his rounds, anyways?

                        • If he is a foot cop, and there are many in NYC, he has a "neighborhood" that has set parameters and he can be anywhere within those boundaries at any time on his shift. As long as he was not somewhere across town or, (if a mobile cop) in an area out of his jurisdiction. What's the beef?

                            • Yeah in all seriousness cops in NYC regularly interact with the homeless there. This cop probably was familiar with that guy to some degree. NYC cops do a lot more community engagement and a lot loss meter maid type work. People like to see cops when they are in NYC and the cops aren't looking people up and down with suspicion until they get an obvious reason to do so. The dynamic is totally different.

                              • DanO....., I have my own opinion on this and I reckon it's more likely to be hammered than your "cop missing on duty" thing. Id be asking the guy to get off his fucking arse and go get a job....., ANY job....., then he will be able to afford Bedsit rent AND boots. All this whinging pish that there aren't any jobs etc etc. of course there are jobs. It's just easier for some people to sit on their ass and beg.
I know some of them have homeless heartbreaking stories....... But a large number of them are spongers. Here in the UK we have "the big issue"....., I actually witnessed a bloke getting changed back into his expensive clothes after selling his magazines on the Waverley Station Steps in Princes Street, Edinburgh. They had a tent thing in a disused shop doorway. I was curious so I awaited him coming out from the tent a whole 15 minutes later....., Nike trainers, Abercrombie & Finch top etc etc....., he was selling his mags wearing a shitty green Parker and dirty plimsole shoes. Really annoys me. Tax dodging bastards probably raking it in in benefits. AAARGH!!!
