  • "With all due respect, DanO. When one follows your prescription and then the savings are eliminated by divorce and the income is diminished by Support payments, sometimes a Credit Card is necessary to buy necessities."
-------------------Absolutely Malto. I'm all too familiar with the courts who don't give a shit what the male's bills are or what he has to live in. That's a condition beyond ones control and not what I'm referring too. Under those conditions you do what you have to do to stay afloat. I'm referring to people who go into debt of there own free will and stupidity.

"I know you know what I am talking about but, everyone does not have the same earning power to bounce back from a setback in life."
----------------------------I know Malto. There was a point where I was close to having to go the CC way. My dad had written me a check for several thousand dollars but I never had to cash it. I ended up burning it with great pleasure.

"Some people over estimate their future earnings."
-------------------------I would never do that as you are counting on earnings that are not yet secure. You don't count on something you don't have.

Again, I am not referring to anyone who comes under hard times due to job loss, lowered wages, our redoubtable and completely fair court systems, etc. I'm talking about people who put themselves in dubious situations voluntarily.

    • There is a much larger picture to the whole debt story. As Thomas Jefferson warned us:
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation then by deflation, the banks and the corporations will grow up around them, will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."
Essentially, the value of your money is being wiped out by central banking, making it difficult to save because money is losing value. If you had put $1,000 in a drawer 20 years ago, it will have lost 20% of its value today, so you're in a race to find investments that protect the value and return at a rate higher than the losses.

Not to mention that our economic prosperity and our middle class are being wiped out by inflationary central banking, all the while we're encouraged to consume with debt.

I wrote a piece about fiat money here. It touches on some of these issues.
The only thing missing from that Marvin Jones touchdown reversal is that it wasn't a first round playoff game.

I am with you Deb, but if it were not for the government student loans, I would really have had a difficult time sending my brood to college.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

Deb and Mark bring up a good point. Getting student loans or financing college with whatever debt is exactly counting on earnings that are not yet secure and counting on something you don't have. If you're on board with that, how about a set of mechanics tools, programming software, or a $5k espresso machine for a coffee shop? At what point are you going to claim 'dubious'?

I do understand the point and maybe 'frivolous' would be a better term than 'dubious' but it's ultimately going to come down to a value judgment. ULF is on the right track - a lot of these problems would not be problems if not for central banking, monetary policy, and fiat money. My kudo's to you responsible folk were sincere, though, it's real tough to be debt free and I'm striving toward that myself.

            • My 12 year old won 1st round of tourney play last night 5-3

a really bad 3rd strike call got him out in the 2nd (you can just see when the catcher has to reach way across you just know it didn't cross the plate)

his only shot at a defensive play he threw a guy out after the ball bounced off the pitchers foot it was a pretty nice play since he had to charge the ball and throw in a hurry to get him out

His other 2 at bats he walked and was thrown out.
              I'm not to blame.

I voted for the other guy!

              • The Starbucks near where I work has a policy where, if they don't have your drink, or you don't like the way they make it, they will make another drink for you for free. I frequently go about ten minutes before they close to get a cup for the ride home. Frequently, they've already poured out the remaining coffee in preparation for closing. I always ask for a coffee. If they don't have any, I get a free latte (which is like four bucks).

                  • If it's the policy, it's not a scam. They can easily avoid it by simply NOT closing up shop 10 minutes before they're supposed to.

...and it's not like the free latte Slim is getting really costs $4. It's probably faster and cheaper for them to make an individual latte than brew a new pot of coffee.
