  • Pete Carroll expecting to work Damon Harrison into the mix as soon as possible

Posted by Curtis Crabtree on October 7, 2020, 11:21 PM EDT
    USA TODAY Sports

Even though Damon Harrison signed with the practice of the Seattle Seahawks, expect him to be playing in games with his new team relatively quickly.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday that they are using the practice squad as a place for Harrison to get up to speed after officially signing with the team earlier in the day. Once Harrison is able to catch up physically and mentally with learning the defense, he’ll be a part of the mix on Seattle’s defense.

“Damon’s been a real force in the league and he’s got a real special style and he’s so big and so strong and stout in the middle,” Carroll said. “This opportunity to get him now and to get him on the practice squad is to give him some chance to work and get ready and learn what we’re doing and see where he can fit in as soon as possible. … He’s a player that’s got big character in the locker room. His attitude and personality that you add to the team is really special. Whenever we can do that we’re trying to get better and so hopefully he’ll be able to add in. Right now we just want him to just get to work and get going.”

Harrison is mainly a run stopping defensive tackle and will be joining a team that already ranks third in the league in run defense through the first four weeks of the season. The Seahawks are allowing an average of 75.8 yards per game on the ground through four weeks.

“Snacks has been a notorious run defender. I mean he’s big time in the middle and stopping things up,” Carroll said. “He’s not been a guy that’s gonna be a third down pass (rush) specialist but that doesn’t mean that on the earlier downs by him creating the penetration he can’t free up space and all that. He’s been a factor like that in the past and so we’ll hope for that as we get going. We got to get him back in there first.”

Harrison went through his first practice with the team on Wednesday. Carroll wouldn’t say that Harrison will be up with the team for Sunday night’s game against Dalvin Cook and the Minnesota Vikings just yet, but he did note that they’ve used the practice squad elevation mechanism several times this year to bring up players for game day action.

“Let me see him on a practice field first. I don’t know. I gotta see what he looks like running around,” Carroll said. “Learning the defense, he’ll be fine there. He’s a really smart football player. That’s not going to be a problem. It’s just how fit he is and all that. He’s a big man, you know, so we got to see what he looks like.

“You’ve noticed we’ve been able to use players off our practice squad that have been playing in our games and they’ve been part of it. It’s an expanded roster in this new format and we’re trying to take full advantage of that and make the most of it.”

    • Fulgham producing for Philly ... never understood why he was cut, but I guess GB cut him too and they sure needed WR

      must have an attitude
WHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

      • Saw that.
Fulgham is the Eagles best WR today. Next year it will be Jason Huntley becoming Sproles 2.0

Darren Fells and Nevin Lawson making some plays today too!

                • Quinn knows how to draft WRs in general. Golladay a 3rd RD pick. A draft strength!
                  OLine too.

Now everything else and being particularly bad at drafting defense / ignoring pass rush? Yup.

He's solid at drafting OL first day. Dahl is ok but whatever and Stenberg a project. Those are the value areas for OL. When you draft OL top 3 rounds they better be good

                    • I wouldn't say he knows how to draft WR's in general, it just looks that way compared to who was drafting before him - because lets be honest before him had no clue whatsoever if that WR wasn't a top 10 pick - they'd just go sign FA's......

I wouldn't give him the moniker of O-Line guru. It's not like we have Dallas' O-line blowing holes so far open you could drive a truck through. They have a decent amount of *potential because of where they were picked.

He sucks. He thought he would do better because he now has a coach that he was used to getting players in that scheme. Yet, he still can't field a D that isn't in the very bottom of the league.

                        He's too patient
He plays it too close to the vest and is afraid to make moves
                        He wants choir boys
He still doesn't know what a pass rusher looks like.

                        Second fiddle team.

Disagree with any comment that picks at Bob Quinn drafting OLine or WR. Quinn has been decent to good at it. The OLine has been one of the few competent units this season.
As I said, everything else? Bad. That's why the Lions look like a dumpster fire right now and Quinn deserves to lose his job.

Ok, let's go down the list.

                          2016:
1st - Taylor Decker. Received a 2nd contract and has the reputation of an above average to good OT. 83.8 PFF grade year 5.
3rd - Graham Glashow. Received a 2nd contract and has the reputation of an above average to good OG. Somewhat struggling in Denver?
5th - Joe Dahl. Received a 2nd contract and has a reputation of an average OG. PFF grades in his career check out.

                          2017:
3rd - Kenny Golladay. Lions best player. Good to great WR. Needs to get healthy in 2020!

                          2018:
1st - Frank Ragnow. On his way to receiving a well deserved 2nd contract and has the reputation as a good starting C. Good to great PFF grades.
2nd - Tyrell Crosby. Small sample size, but PFF grades of 70.0 in 2018, 62.4 in 2019, and 70.5 in 2020. I'd call it a hit for a 5th RD pick.

                          2019:
6th - Travis Fulgham. Bust with the Lions, but apparently the Eagles found something in him? To early to say for sure... but damn, Fulgham looked good yesterday.

                          2020:
3rd - Jonah Jackson. 63.8 PFF grade in his 4 starts. Solid.
                          4th - Logan Stenberg. TBD.
5th - Quintez Cephus. Cephus will stick around on this roster for 4 years barring injury. Cephus can play in the NFL.

                          • I remember Fulgham making a few nice plays downfield during the preseason of his rookie year. That TD catch he made two weeks ago reminded me of that.

Of course, he’s not needed here. Neither is Tonyan. Why develop an athletic TE when you can draft one at #8?

The weird thing is they actually IDENTIFY these guys like Fulgham and Tonyan ... then the stupid GM and coach cut them. Maybe the Lions' SCOUTS actually have brains

I want to see the UDFA TE. How stupid is it that they have never put him on IR and he hasn't played through 4 weeks?

Fulgham was pretty good at Old D and had a really goo Senior Bowl Week. It was all there. I don't remember Tonyan. But I understand your point Cody, but the drafting is a part of it. A big part, but, so is development and useage.

Now King makes a good point in the standpoint of the GM needs to provide the team what they need. Not who HE thinks is a good player. That does nobody any good. Now MS will throw it on occasion to his TEs. But does he lean on them like L Jack and Mahommes where a early 1st rd pick on one is justified? I don't think so. So it doesn't matter much if we have TJ or Kittle, IDK if it comes out any different. He's just not comfortable there. BQ would have been better suited to getting value there (DL) then going with a TE that his QB isn't going to go very often to.

Lastly, the GM picks the coach and, in concert with said coach, picks his assistants. Development wise, most stink. Players picked later (usually much later) out play our players. Even the ones who were universally viewed as better. I'm convinced we could trade our team with some other teams, NE, KC, etc... and we'd still lose.

This team is terrible. And they're headed the wrong way. With an aging QB and NO wrs under contract after this year (except Cephus). This team needs to be purged.
