  • opening concert in Pinnacle (night before UCLA game....) will be
    ********************
Pinnacle Bank Arena has a few concerts on its calendar, but it?s crooner Michael Bubl? who will open the new venue in September.

When he performs there Sept. 13, the singer will be the first concert at the new arena currently under construction in Lincoln.

Tickets will go on sale May 17; ticket prices have not yet been announced.

The "Haven?t Met You Yet" singer?s concerts are proving popular. He sold out 10 nights in London and 5 more in Dublin during June and July.

"I?m very excited to get back on the road and perform for my fans. It?s been a while, but we?re rested up and ready to have a big party on stage every night," Bubl? said in a press release.

The last time he was in the area, more than 10,000 fans caught his 2010 concert at CenturyLink Center Omaha.

Pinnacle Bank Arena also has concerts on the calendar for country star Jason Aldean, who sold out a show last week in Omaha, on Sept. 19 and pop singer Pink on Nov. 9. Tickets to Pink?s concert are already sold out.

    • Lincoln - A total of 57 Husker student-athletes, including 11 Nebraska football players, are scheduled to earn their diplomas at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?s commencement exercises on Saturday morning, being held inside Memorial Stadium for the first time in history.

The diverse group of 57 graduates includes five Huskers who have combined to earn eight CoSIDA Academic All-America awards so far in their careers. It also includes extremely talented individuals in competition, from a WNBA first-round draft pick to an NCAA bowling champion and individual All-Americans in track and field, women?s basketball, bowling, women?s gymnastics and an NCAA finalist in air rifle.

Among the 11 football players from Coach Bo Pelini?s Husker program, four will earn their degrees before completing their final season of eligibility on the field, including Jason Ankrah, Stanley Jean-Baptiste, Brent Qvale and Jeremiah Sirles. Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Sean Fisher, along with Justin Blatchford, Jesse Coffey, Jase Dean, P.J. Mangieri and Matt Manninger are also set to receive their diplomas Saturday.

Coach Gary Pepin?s men?s and women?s track and field program contributed a solid group of 12 graduates, including nine men and three women. Bjorn Barrefors, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and Nebraska?s 2013 Male Student-Athlete of the Year, headlines track and field?s contingent. The multi-eventer from Stockholm, Sweden, will earn his degree in computer science. Nate Polacek (Kearney, Neb.) and Brett Grieb (York, Neb.) give the track and field programs two more 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans set to graduate.

Barrefors, Polacek and Chris Phipps also represented the track graduates as All-Americans in competition, along with Jessica Furlan, who earned All-America honors on the track in 2012. Furlan, Katie White and Erica Hamik all represented the Huskers in both track and field and cross country during their careers.

Coach Tim Miles? Nebraska men?s basketball program will be represented by four graduates on Saturday, led by 2013 seniors Brandon Ubel and Andre Almeida. Former Huskers Mike Fox and Christopher Niemann also will receive diplomas.

On the women?s basketball side, 2013 All-American and WNBA first-round draft pick Lindsey Moore earns her degree in communication studies. Moore, a point guard from Covington, Wash., was a four-year starter for the Huskers and set the school career assist record with 699. She started more games, won more games and played more minutes than any other Husker in history while leading Coach Connie Yori?s squad to a pair of NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.

Coach Darin Erstad?s baseball team will feature four graduates on Saturday, led by current Huskers Chad Christensen and Zach Hirsch. Both NU seniors are scheduled to represent Nebraska in competition at Hawks Field on Saturday as the Huskers open a key Big Ten home series with No. 16 Indiana.

Coach Rhonda Revelle?s Nebraska softball team also contributes four graduates to NU?s class, led by former standout pitcher and CoSIDA Academic All-American Ashley Hagemann (Elkhorn, Neb.). The Nebraska wrestling team adds four grads to the group, while the men?s golf team features three graduates from a team that has won three consecutive Herman Awards for producing NU?s top men?s team grade-point average.

Coach Scott Jacobson?s women?s tennis team features a pair of graduates - Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein - from the most successful tennis teams in school history in recent years. The women?s tennis team has also won back-to-back Herman Awards and will play host to NCAA Tournament for the first time in NU history next weekend in Lincoln.

The men?s tennis team, volleyball, women?s swimming and diving team and the rifle team each contributed a pair of graduates, while the men?s and women?s gymnastics teams, women?s golf and bowling teams each added one graduate this spring.

Kristi Mickelson from Bellevue, Neb., was the lone senior on Coach Bill Straub?s national champion bowling team in 2013. Mickelson led the Huskers to their fourth NCAA title in the past 10 years before capturing an individual national championship of her own at the IBC X-Singles Championships a week later. Mickelson is also an outstanding student as a dual major in criminology and criminal justice/psychology who could contend for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors later this spring.

NU?s May 2013 graduates came from near and far to call Nebraska home during their careers. The group came to Lincoln from 15 states, including 25 native Nebraskans. Members of the graduating class also came from four foreign countries, including Brazil, Canada, Germany and Sweden.

Nebraska continues to feature one of the highest graduation rates in the country, while leading the nation in the number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (302) and NCAA Top Eight Award winners (16) across all sports.

      • Omaha Beef indoor team offers Tebow a contract; current QB says 'Tim can learn a lot from me'

By The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – Tue, 30 Apr, 2013 4:17 PM EDT

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Beef have a job waiting for Tim Tebow if he wants it — and the Nebraska indoor football team will even pay him $75 a game.
A day after Tebow was cut by the New York Jets, the Beef called the office of Tebow agent Jimmy Sexton to offer a standard player contract. Beef assistant general manager Andrew Mather said Tuesday that he doesn't expect to hear back, but he thought it was worth asking.
The Beef's current quarterback, James McNear, has led the team to a 5-1 start. He's completing 70 per cent of his passes and has thrown for 21 touchdowns against just two interceptions.
McNear is anything but insulted by the Beef's wooing of Tebow. McNear said, "I think Tim can learn a lot from me."

Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst took a shot at Steve Sipple during his address at the Lincoln Country Club.

OK, not really. Slow Husker news day, so I was trying to pep things up a little.

Eichorst addressed the Chamber of Commerce as the guest speaker at a luncheon on Wednesday. One of the questions he took from the audience was based on Sipple's column last week about the end of college football. Eichorst said he was confident his boys would all play football and that he understood the role of columnists.

"They like to make a little noise," Eichorst said.

                                That's our Sip.

A few other tidbits from Eichorst's address:

                                * With Tommie Frazier, Vinny Testaverde and Ron Dayne making it into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday, Eichorst noted he has relationships with all three after having worked at Miami and Wisconsin previously.

                                * Eichorst said Nebraska student athletes have participated in more than 3,500 hours of community service this year.

                                * He noted that there's a waiting list of 2,000 fans for NU volleyball tickets.

                                * He said the athletic program is "very healthy" financially and there aren't many "folks like us that balance the athletic books." That said, he also noted that "a lot of people are spending a lot of money and not winning. At Nebraska, we want to win but we want to do it with the utmost integrity and respect."
