Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross ‘Really Wants’ Deshaun Watson?

August 31st, 2021 at 12:42pm CST by Andrew Ortenberg

There have been conflicting reports about the Dolphins’ level of interest in trading for Deshaun Watson, and now we may know why. It appears there may be something of a split in the organization, perhaps between ownership and the coaching staff.

Miami owner Stephen Ross “really wants” Watson, a source told Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald tweeted that he’s heard the same, although he writes that the Dolphins “have balked at asking price.” However, he thinks if the team “can get him at good value amid legal uncertainty, that would appeal to Ross.”

That’s not the case, according to sources who spoke with Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald (Twitter links). Any word to the contrary “is inaccurate” because Ross believes in Tua Tagovailoa and “doesn’t force football decisions.”

Meanwhile, we just heard earlier this morning that the Texans won’t be trading Watson today, meaning they’ll be keeping him on their initial 53-man roster. Ross’ desire for the embattled quarterback could put him in conflict with head coach Brian Flores. Flores said on Monday that the team wanted “high character throughout the building,” which many interpreted as him throwing cold water on the Watson speculation.

Of course, the team has Tua Tagovailoa as their quarterback right now, and if a trade doesn’t materialize this will have proved to have all been an unwelcome distraction for Flores right before the start of the season.

Whatever the case, it’s interesting to know that ownership is apparently driving Miami’s pursuit of Watson. It’s a dynamic that threatens to throw a wrench in everything, and potentially lead to some messy fallout.

      DEZ FITZPATRICKWR, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT
      Titans waived WR Dez Fitzpatrick.

The move is a bit of a head-scratcher as the Titans selected Fitzpatrick in the fourth round of the most recent draft to backfill their depleted receiving room. They even traded up with the Panthers to lock him in. Despite subbing out Corey Davis for Julio Jones, Tennessee was still in search of good depth options at wide receiver this offseason. With Titans coaches and beat writers alike noting throughout the summer that Fitzpatrick was struggling in practice, his absence from the final roster is more defensible. He will likely draw interest from multiple teams given his fourth-round pedigree.

        49ers released TE Jordan Matthews.

Doing everything he can to stay in the league after injuries took his legs out from underneath him, Matthews converted to tight end earlier this offseason. He will presumably continue to try to develop at the position on the 49ers' practice squad.

        • Dez Fitzpatrick was the first WR selected on day 3 of the 2021 NFL Draft in Round 4. Who was the second? Amon-Ra St. Brown.
I remember being happy about it too because St. Brown was on my shortlist for the Lions at the time. Sure Titans, go ahead and select Fitzpatrick!

          ...

McDowell actually did it! Great story.

That is awesome for the former Spartan.

Got hurt riding a ATV and subsequently after trying to rehabbing the injury was let go after a while with the Seahawks. The Browns gave him a shot and he made the 53 on a STACKED team.

              • Judge uses NFL’s reason for leaving St. Louis to justify not moving Rams relocation litigation

Posted by Mike Florio on August 31, 2021, 9:37 PM EDT

The NFL has decided to try to move the Rams relocation lawsuit out of St. Louis. The presiding judge has decided not to do so.

Via Jacob Kim of the St. Louis Business Journal, Judge Christopher McGraugh concluded on Tuesday that there’s no evidence that potential jurors in the case have an inherent bias against the league.

In reaching this conclusion, Judge McGraugh relied in part on the NFL’s justification for leaving St. Louis in the first place. He pointed out that the league decided that “there wasn’t enough support in this community to maintain the team.”

“It seems now to be able to say that this community is so angry that they’ll punish them for leaving seems to be contrary,” McGraugh said.

Here’s the other basic reality, as previously explained. Most people in any given NFL community don’t care about the local NFL team. That’s why politicians take such great pains to avoid public votes on questions of the investment of public money into the construction of a new stadium. Most people in a community don’t care about the local NFL team. Plenty do; usually, more than enough to fill the stadium and to watch the game on TV. But there’s not the kind of saturation that would make it impossible for the NFL to find jurors capable of being unbiased as to the NFL because they’re upset that the Rams left.

In our view, the NFL doesn’t want a new jury pool. It wants a new judge. And a motion to recuse Judge McGraugh eventually could be coming, given that he previously has decided to allow the plaintiffs to have a look at the financial records of Commissioner Roger Goodell, Rams owner Stan Kroenke, and other owners.

                • Malik McDowell's mom was annoying in the high school stands. She was ways chirping. We went into a playoff game against them as a decided underdog just hoping to not give up 50. After the loss, she is talking trash as our players got on the bus. In games like that you are just hoping to put up enough physical fight to not get hurt, that team was a Divsion 1 team masquerading as a Division 3 team.

Apparently you have not been to any AAU basketball games. The parents are fucking relentless morons. Every call that goes against their team is a bad call. Every opposing kids is a thug. Parents yelling at kids. Parents yelling at parents. Parents wanting to fight kids and coaches. The idiocy has no bounds

                        Yeah. It's been decades.

I have been to Football AAU games and because of the scarcity of people you don't hear what they're saying from the other side of the field.

My daughter went through something like this when she played HS Softball though. Everyone expects that dumb idiocy, but it was a certain team in the Howell area that had her and a lot of the young ladies in tears. They even were throwing things at their bus. Grand Blanc will no longer play that school. In any sport.

                        • By retiring, Malcom Butler gives up $3.25 million

Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2021, 9:58 AM EDT

                          USA TODAY Sports

The unofficial MVP of Super Bowl XLIX surprisingly has retired from the NFL. In so doing, he’ll give up a fairly significant chunk of change.

Cornerback Malcolm Butler‘s one-year deal with the Cardinals included a $2.175 million signing bonus. He’ll owe that money to the team. He also will lose a guaranteed salary of $1.075 million, along with up to $2.75 million in incentives tied to playing time and whether the Cardinals make the playoffs.

The good news for the Cardinals is that they won’t have to pursue Butler for most of the signing bonus. Per a source with knowledge of the contract, $1.375 million of the signing bonus was deferred to March 31, 2022. He has received only $800,000.

The Cardinals placed Butler on the reserve/retired list. He can unretire at any time, through the late-season deadline that closes the door completely on a return.

                          • AAU basketball is bad, most of the time the stands are empty so it's not a.problem. But every once in a while you will see some team that has a bunch of parents that see their kids as meal tickets. It seems like the ones that have good players but not the top players are the worst. The teams that have the amazing players aren't as bad.

My daughter had a high school playoff against the best team in the state regardless of division and their parents were a joy as they were rolling on us. They were a top 20 nationally ranked team, our star player had 20 in the first half, we played our best and we're still down 15 at half. At halftime the opposition buckled down and came out and they went up by 50 by the end of the 3rd. There was no trash talk.

Coach Pete Carroll talked up Nkemdiche in June, but that predictably fizzled. The former first-rounder has played just two games since the end of the 2018 season. Dolphins waived LB Shaquem Griffin.

The Dolphins signed Griffin as a depth piece in July, but he evidently didn't do enough to crack the 53-man roster. Griffin mostly operated as a special-teamer during his time in Seattle. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero added that Griffin, who is supposedly trying to transition to linebacker full-time, will likely end up on Miami's practice squad.
