    • Just wait until it plays out. Walker has the traits. Nobody knows who the best is until they step on the field.

                • Report: MRI confirms Tarik Cohen ruptured his Achilles

Tarik Cohen’s injury looked like a ruptured Achilles when it happened on a live stream. Unfortunately, for the free agent running back that’s exactly what it was.

An MRI confirmed the injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Cohen was working out Tuesday when he fell to the ground and grabbed the back of his ankle after trying to change directions.

Cohen has not played since third game of 2020 when he tore his ACL, forcing him to miss the rest of that season and the entire 2021 season. He was working out in the hopes of finding a team that would sign him for 2022 as the Bears had designated him a post-June 1 release.

Cohen, a fourth-round draft pick of the Bears in 2017, was a first-team All-Pro return man in 2018.

                  • John Mara “not happy” Giants are hosting Monday night game on Rosh Hashanah

The Giants asked the NFL not to give them a home game in Week 3 of the 2022 season. League schedule-makers did not grant the request, with the Giants playing the Cowboys on Monday Night Football on Sept. 26 at MetLife Stadium.

That will prohibit Jewish fans wishing to observe the High Holiday of Rosh Hashanah from attending one of the most highly anticipated games of the Giants’ home schedule.

“I am well aware of that and not happy about it,” John Mara, the Giants co-owner, told Paul Schwartz of The New York Post on Tuesday. “I made my feelings known to the league as soon as I saw the schedule. We have always requested the league take the Jewish High Holy Days into consideration when formulating our schedule. Not sure why it happened this year.”

The 32 teams annually give the league blackout dates when it is unable to host a game. They also can request things such as a bye week after an international game or back-to-back games on the West Coast or, in the Giants’ case, not having a game on Rosh Hashanah.

“We are never able to accommodate every request,” Howard Katz, the NFL’s senior vice president of broadcasting and the leader of the group that puts together the schedule, told The Post. “It’s a pretty complex puzzle we put together.

“Mr. Mara absolutely this year and every year when the Jewish holidays fall on football days, he always asks to avoid the Jewish holidays. He certainly did. In this particular case we were not able to accommodate that request.”

A Monday night home game on Rosh Hashanah against the Cowboys in 1998 prompted the Giants to begin requesting to play on the road during the Jewish High Holy Days.

                    • XFL to air on ESPN, ABC, FX in 2023

The XFL officially has its TV partner for the 2023 relaunch.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is a part owner and the public face of the new XFL, announced today that ESPN, ABC and FX — all owned by Disney — will air every XFL game next season.

That move was widely expected. ESPN has been giving plenty of publicity to the XFL, and little to the rival USFL, which is owned by Fox.

Whether the USFL returns in 2023 remains to be seen, but if it does, its players will be contractually barred from playing in the XFL.

The XFL originally launched with great fanfare in 2001, but it went belly-up after one season. Vince McMahon then re-launched the XFL in 2020, but it lasted less than one season. After that, Johnson and a group of investors purchased the XFL and vowed to bring it back. From all appearances, they’re on track to start it. Whether they can make it last remains to be seen.

                      • Sony Michel is planning to “rock” No. 34 in Ricky Williams’ honor

Sony Michel grew up in Plantation, Florida, watching the Dolphins. He was only 7 when Ricky Williams set a team record with 1,853 yards.

So, after Michel signed with the Dolphins as a free agent, he chose to follow in Williams’ cleat marks by picking No. 34.

“Everybody knows, man, this is a great number,” Michel said Tuesday, via Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post. “Ricky Williams ran the ball hard here. I’m sure he did a lot of numbers (statistics). You know what I’m saying? So I can’t just be rocking it just to rock it. I’ve got to come out here and put in some work.”

The Dolphins have a crowded running backs room that includes Michel, Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. New head coach Mike McDaniel wants to run the ball.

“He’s a guy, a coach, that believes in running the football, and I do, too, believe in this league to be successful, you have to run the football and stop the run and be committed to it,” Michel said. “And that’s kind of the reason why I came here also.”

Michel is ready for the competition that will come for starting job.

He spent last season in Los Angeles with the Rams. Michel played all 17 games with seven starts for the Super Bowl champions and had 208 carries for 845 yards and four touchdowns while catching 21 passes for 128 yards and a score.

                          • Phillip Lindsay agrees to deal with Colts

Running back Phillip Lindsay said in April that he was looking for the right fit before signing a contract for the 2022 season and he apparently found it in Indianapolis.

Lindsay’s agent Mike McCartney announced on Tuesday that Lindsay has agreed to terms with the Colts. It’s a one-year deal for Lindsay with the AFC South team.

Lindsay played 10 games for the Texans last season before getting cut in November. He was claimed by the Dolphins and played in four more games. He ran 88 times for 249 yards and a touchdown overall and he ran for 2,550 yards for the Broncos in his first three NFL seasons.

The Colts have Jonathan Taylor back as their top running back and Nyheim Hines has been talked up as a receiver and change of pace back, so Lindsay will have to make a strong impression to carve out a role in the offense.

                            • Recent shoulder surgery would complicate a potential Drew Brees return

Posted by Mike Florio on May 17, 2022, 12:53 PM EDT

While it’s still unclear from a Sunday night tweet whether future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees is truly thinking about coming back to football (one more tweet could clear it up quickly), there’s one specific complication to any desire to play football.

As noted by Peter King in his latest Football Morning in America column, Brees had left shoulder surgery on May 2. ESPN’s Ed Werder added earlier today that Brees “would be physically unable to play until at least September or October.”

Again, if there was a joke in the original Brees tweet, it’s far from obvious. He has tweeted since then. He can end the mystery quickly and cleanly, if he wants.

Maybe he doesn’t. Maybe he isn’t kidding. Maybe he knows he could perform better than more than a few starting quarterbacks right now. Maybe he thinks he could still run the Sean Payton offense better than Jameis Winston will. Maybe Brees realizes he’d instantly be the best option for the Seahawks, the Panthers, the Texans, or (sorry, TuAnon) the Dolphins.

Regardless, Brees said what he said. As reporters and others try to walk it back, Brees started the fire. If he wanted to put it out, he could.

                              • Damone Clark credits Cowboys for diagnosing his spinal issue, then drafting him anyway

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 17, 2022, 12:50 PM EDT

                                Getty Images

In March, major concerns were raised about the future of former LSU linebacker Damone Clark after he was diagnosed with a spinal condition that required surgery and will likely force him to miss his rookie year. The Cowboys ultimately drafted Clark late in the fifth round, much later than expected before his injury was diagnosed, but Clark feels confident he landed in the right place.

That’s in part because it was the Cowboys’ medical staff that diagnosed the spinal condition in a pre-draft exam.

“The crazy thing is, at the Combine, Dallas’ medical staff was the one that told me,” Clark said, via the Cowboys’ website. “When they told me, I was shocked. I’m like ‘Whoa, maybe y’all got the wrong person.'”

Clark said he played the entire 2021 college season with the injury the Cowboys spotted and felt perfectly fine, which made him at first suspect that there was a misdiagnosis. But when spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins gave him a second opinion that matched the Cowboys’ opinion, Clark was thankful for the Cowboys’ doctors spotting the problem.

“I went out and got a second opinion, and Dr. Watkins said the same thing,” Clark said. “It’s crazy that this is the team that drafted me. So I already feel comfortable here.”

The Cowboys are obviously confident Clark can make a full recovery, or else they wouldn’t have drafted him. Clark thinks he’s on the best team for his own career, starting in 2023.
