Mark, msconfig is fine for what you're trying to do, but the best solution is to look there at each program and then uninstall the ones you don't want running.
I can understand the "registry is bad place to go" feelings. But as long as a person sticks to those paths then MSconfig is probably worse. It seems like a quick fix but that system was never designed to run permanently. Causing the system to run a filter like that over the registry just causes the registry decay to happen faster.

Aha... fyi, the best and cheapest (free) porn is still on usenet. The 'don't be an idiot with files' caveat still applies, of course.

My computer does not run slow (a sure sign of infection) and is not on-line 24/7. It gets shut down everytime I am done using it.

I must be doing something right. I am not entirely ignorant of how things work over the internets. My IT friends (this place included) tell me I am lucky but they also have me do this and that to make sure and I am always home free. I don't really think its luck. I really think there is something to the AV programs being in cohoots with the "bad guys".

I may be jinxing myself but after 4+ years, I am not too worried about being hit now.
Malwarebytes while very good isn't the end all be all. At work we've had several outbreaks where MB scans found nothing but either Spybot or other tools found something. Don't get me wrong no tool finds everything and MB is the best one around IMO but it isn't perfect. If you can live with losing everything on your PC then by all means surf full Monty.

Also if anyone ever thinks of buying CA antivirus let me know. I'll kick you in the nuts 50 times, take your money and you'll still be ahead.

                • Gonz doesn't get infected with computer virsuses. Viruses get infected with Gonz.

Gonz's computer doesn't need anitivirus. It kills them with a roundhouse kick.

                    • never been impressed by CA products - their backup product especially is crap.

I hope you never encounter one. They are a BITCH to get rid of...

Like I have said, other IT types think like you and damn me to hell but I do not get infected for some reason.

Again, I'm not changing anything after all these years of no issues.

All my other computers before this one used to get a major bug at least one time in its lifetime and I always made sure I had what was recommended as the best AV at the time. I even borrowed some spam disc from DEB way back in the day.

Just lucky I guess. And I'll take that.

I already have emulators on my Samsung Epic, and can download & play games from the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and the first Playstation. So, yes this is a fair assessment...Windows Phone 7 has Xbox Live on it.

                            • Yeah I have the Samsung vibrant. Things pretty amazing. I can't believe how good the google navigator is.. its like a beautiful free GPS unit with better resolution and detail than expensive GPS units. My fianc?es Garmin is reduced to a backup role.

The GPS units, hand held game system, and MP3 players are all just about done as separate units with smart phones getting cheaper and stronger.
