OK.

So, my new laptop arrived on Wednesday.

It is running 8.1. I was a little skeptical after hearing some comments but after just a couple of hours playing around, I am begining to like it.

I really hate the keyboard though. I have always used a traditional keyboard and can type quite well with one.

This soft touch keyboard sucks and will take some getting used to.

.........like don't let your fingers remain on the keys like I was taught using a typewriter.

Damn, the cursor jumps all around when I type and for unexplained reasons, strange things happen when trying to type.

Guess I gotta log more type time.

If there's a touchpad on your laptop, it's possible that your palm is hitting it as you type, causing the cursor to move around. There's usually a setting for the touchpad to lessen this.

You are probably right.

I am indeed touching with palms as well as fingers.

I will find how to adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad but also learn how to type with hands off.

I usually hook up a wireless mouse and disable the touchpad. They're always in the way.

ULF, yikes I thought I had written you back on this!

I did indeed get one, and it's working great. I put up all of the photos & videos of Tyler for the past two years, and my dad was able to get them all with no problem.

The only snag we've hit is the video files from the video camera (it's a Sony) aren't compatible with his Mac. I haven't had time to convert the files from the old format to something he can use, but I'll do that eventually.

I just put in one of those WD MyCloud (4TB) NAS units. It's very cool.

Now I have a single place for all of our pictures (40,000) and video (850,) and they're accessible from anywhere. I can give my family access so they can view all of our pictures as well.

The Android app for remote access is awesome as well. It has a built-in photo viewer with slideshow, and it works flawlessly without delays.

The MyCloud is a full media streamer, so watching videos is very smooth.

One cool thing I learned about it is that it automatically builds smaller versions of your photos and caches them. That's great because my DSLR creates 3-4MB files that would be horrible for slideshows across the net.

The next thing I need it to do will require a little hacking. I want to put a second 4TB unit in my Sister's house, and have this one constantly mirror to it. That way we won't lose our photos and video if there's a hardware failure, or worse yet a house fire.

So in your research, what convinced you that WD was the brand to go with? My last external HDD storge unit research led me to go with Seagate over WD due to FAR LESS bricking. Has WD really caught up in build quality in just over the past 6 years?

This isn't just an external drive, it's a server. Seagate's comparable product doesn't quite have the features of the WD. The WD has been quite highly rated, so I went with it.

LFIJ, I think you can run a different video viewing app on your dad's iPad to view your format (what are they, avi?) I'd have guessed a Sony would create .MOVs, which should be good on the iPad...
