  • Sigh. Looks as if DimWiT is at it again. I'll bet he went full...

I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

    • Negative.

I only checked in here when you made the Emmitt assertion, which you have been gleefully battling until this most recent Judo Maneuver.

Hell, I'll be the first one to say that I don't like how the Lions have seemed to actively avoid acquiring anyone who might be seen as a challenge to Stafford's spot, and instead have only brought in people who don't possibly have a ceiling above backup caliber.

That said, it's not as simple as just saying, "Hey, we're going to target someone who might be a starter in the NFL." You actually need some names, some prospects that might get there, because there aren't as many as some people think.

Really, the only opportunity in the draft I can think of in the last couple years that I think the Lions could have realistically pulled the trigger on was Connor Cook... and even then, they weren't wrong in the slightest to reinforce the lines with the picks they had.

In Free Agency, really the only "starter caliber" QB that's been out there for the last few years is Kaepernick, and he comes with some (personally bullshit) baggage that the NFL doesn't want to touch with a ten foot pole, nor does he have a skill set that the current crop of NFL coaches has any real idea what to do with.

The QB position is simply barren, and it doesn't look like its going to get better any time soon. Hell, Stafford might be the last of a dying breed before the NFL has to start adopting spread offenses simply to be able to have QBs that can operate at this level.

              • Right Big O. But, someone has to be the pinata! And he must like being just that because he has only 1 person that agrees with him.

Most of the people that regularly post have him on ignore.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

Now, let's see how he's coached up.

I'll wait, but not very confident

                    • Q: Any word on why Stafford decided to work with a QB coach during the offseason? -- @curseofthegooch

A: I think it's just part of his maturation as a human and football player. He didn't think he needed it when he was younger. Now he sees guys like Matt Ryan, a close friend of his, turn in career years after working with gurus.

Ryan and Stafford have had very similar careers, if you think about it. Both played right away and put up monster stats for eight years, but with little playoff success. Ryan was 1-4 over that time, while Stafford is 0-3.

But then Ryan worked out last offseason with Tom House, a former major league pitcher with a track record for helping quarterbacks, and exploded for his best season ever. Atlanta went to the Super Bowl.

Now Stafford hasn't specified who he worked with, but it's believed to be House as well. He even said he consulted Ryan about the decision. So yeah, I think seeing his friend, who has had a similar career arc, achieve new heights with an outside coach helped Stafford get over whatever hangups he had about doing the same.

I think it also has to do with settling down and starting a family. His window is now reduced to win the big one or get the glory for getting there. That is one reason why he will not be signing this year because while the Lions have made him wealthy, they may not be the key for him to get to the promised land. He is honing his own skills because the longer he holds out from signing, the more options he has to seek his own way to a glory season.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

                          • For the same reason that he started watching game film once he could no longer count on throwing jump balls to CJ.

It's unquestionably "his" team now, and he has to be prepared to lead it. I would have liked it to happen sooner, but better late than never, I suppose.

                              • The whole Tom House thing intrigues me. The guy spent 20 years working with pitchers, his specialty was unconventional workouts to strengthen a pitcher's body. Maybe he is an X and O guy, just seems weird.
