  • Kapture's Sanders quote is classic
It's not an actual quote. It's from an editorial that Sanders put up on on his election site. So, it's an endorsement, but not a quote. The leftists and right wingers can give zero fucks about the facts, but I still care.

    I'm pretty much a moderate, a centrist
Things are shifting at quite the pace, IMO. 2008's centrist is today's conservative. 2008's "blue dog" or moderate D is today's lean right or Red Hat (if they're still on board). It's crazy.

I just worry that under 40 voters don't see that
I think with economics and shit, when people start to make money and start to have kids, they tend to change their views a bit. I think it's also worth noting that PDJT got the Rs obliterated in the suburbs in 2018, but those gains aren't entrenched and those voters aren't going to buy the Palin-Cortez bullshit.

I think with "social justice" and shit, politics really is downstream from culture, and the leftists own the culture-driving machines -- the media (including film, of course) and the universities. So, I would expect the Orwellian social justice machine to continue to crank forward. That's not going to get undone.

Those are broad brush categories. There are still a number of issues that are sort of their own thing with their own middles. Immigration, e.g. But, if I had to predict the next 10 years I'd say in 2020 the Ds win the Executive easily, add a few more seats to the House (they're sort of nearing their asymptote) but the Rs keep the Senate. I think by 2024 they'll have given away those gains. They're going to push hard left and they won't be able to help themselves. There will be a definite opening for the Rs in 2028. The only question I have -- and it's a serious question -- is how long-lasting will PDJT's damage be to the Rs? I tend to think the suburbanite voters get over it in an election or two, especially when the Ds come at them with their preposterous Green New Deal. But, I could be way wrong.

    • and in 2031 the world is going to end according to Palin-Cortez.

      • Heh. Well, only if we don't do something! I mean, this is her World War II!

Unfortunately for Palin-Cortez, an NBC poll shows that while Americans are by and large on board with person-caused climate change, they're not willing to pay $10/mo to do anything about it.

So, the world will end. Or, alternatively, the UN Climate panel will issue a report before then that says we actually need to act by 2040 or all is lost.

            • Highly doubt there's going to be a Green New Deal. It's unlikely we as a group are going to be able to handle the quantitative elements of the discussion, but the qualitative elements are an area in which all can grasp the same reality: the rigidity of the left and the various ideas about what constitutes ideological purity is quite clear. You probably see how that rigidity prevents the unity required and ability to compromise required to get a massive package of legislation like that through today's system. No faction that would potentially support a green new deal is united on what it would include. And, broadly, the concept holds the climate hostage to the whole progressive agenda. And that's before you factor in who holds the senate. You will be sold a lot of fear about this, in the same way that you have been sold a ton of nonsense about economics, but realities on the ground suggest there's not going to be much action. As it stands today it looks like private capital will continue to drive the green economy. Solar and wind power are the cheapest ways to produce power now, even without any subsidy and with subsidies for fossil fuels. People with money are following the money.

                • Beinhart, for whatever anyone thinks of him, suggests that if Pelosi and company are willing to negotiate with PDJT (as indicated by upping the funding to $5.7B and calling it a "smart wall"), then they ought to fucking negotiate for real shit. The problem they have is that they can't give in on "The Wall". I'm not sure PDJT can give them what they want, but if I were them I'd push pretty hard for to get DACA into legislation and out of EO world. However, for reasons alluded to above, ideological purity is going to get in the way (both ways, probably), and there is not bigger symbol of ideological purity than the wall. But, I really view this as an opportunity for the Ds to get some shit they actually really want and that aligns with their core principles. The Wall is symbolic -- a waste of money (hey, government waste is in line with D principles!). If I were them I'd give that up in a heartbeat to get DACA into the legislative realm -- something that is actually fully aligned with D principles.

But, what the fuck do I know.

I think I agree. On this very narrow sliver of the argument, Pelosi looks petty. And, more importantly, it saves PDJT from some sort of alternative speech. I hope.

                  • How is it petty? She gave him an out....she could have said do what many Presidents have done - send a letter. She won the point and let him save face. Perhaps Pelosi is schooling Trump that vindictiveness should not be his standard and only response. Doubt if he'll get the message.

                    • She helped him out, giving a Stephen Miller penned stemwinder for the State of the Union speech would have hurt him. If they want to actually negotiate, you have to get Miller far away from the negotiating table. You have to give something up to get something. That proposal he had on Sunday had a few Miller poison pills added on to it. Any idea by him is going to kill a deal.

                      • Because the Wall is symbolic nonsense is precisely the reason why there can't be any real negotiation. Nobody on the GOP side thinks they are getting anything if they get 5 billion for a wall except maybe Trump. You aren't likely to give up anything valuable in exchange for anything you deem inconsequential. The extremists will scotch any sort of deal, this has been the story since 2006. Its not changing short of some side suffering a humiliating defeat and even then its unlikely.

                            • I think a big problem, aside from the left owning every avenue of culture (news, schools, music, movies, tv minus PewDiePie with his 82,000,000 subs) is that 40 and under don't know how fucking blessed they are to have what capitalism has provided them. They have completely taken for granted how lucky they are to have been born in this time in this country. Mix that with a lack of a real education and surprise surprise, they embrace socialism.
