I still remember taking my sister to U-M as she was looking into graduate school six years ago. As we left, her first thought was, "What a dump. IU had much better facilities and nicer faculty." That hurt to hear, because I was the one who recommended she look at Ann Arbor. Must be because I hate the place so much.

Truth is, U-M hasn't been the "greatest and the best" for years (I will give a resounding exception to the medical school, which is routinely top ranked not just nationally but worldwide), and is only recently remodeling their athletic and academic facilities to catch up with the rest of the higher education landscape. I'm hoping that they continue to improve and can give the people who love the school legitimate reason to brag about it. I like recommending Michigan schools to people (not just U-M), because frankly, I like it here, and want more people to invest their time in the state.
It is of course ranked the 14th best university in the world, just behind Princeton. But, go on Chemi, I love to hear how much you think it sucks.

I don't think it sucks. I think it stagnated for a handful of years and coasted on its reputation. The administration has since started to rectify that. I'm glad to see it, and that 14th should soon be the Top 10 that it was for decades.

            Try again.

As for the athletic programs... I just want to see them beat "little brother" before the elitists start talking shit about how much better their recruits are to MSU's.

            • The recruits are highly rated. That's just a fact. How they turn out is up in the air.

I don't see anything wrong in feeling good about the direction the program is heading. If they pan out to their potential and sparties recruits turn out to their potential, Michigan wins every time.

I was actually a Grand Valley State graduate. I had an internship with the Detroit Free Press that had me doing a lot of work with U-M Athletics. I considered Michigan for a graduate program, but my GRE really wasn't high enough to give any graduate school realistic thought.

At the time I was there (this was 2000-2001), the campus and facilities were already starting to show their age (significant renovation of many of the buildings had been last done in the early 80's, if I remember correctly), and by the time I escorted my sister to the campus as she was choosing graduate programs... it was not pretty.

The condition of Chrisler Arena and the basketball facilities was only a microcosm of the general disrepair of the university, rather than the exception.

Fortunately, for a good ending to the story, I passed through AA on my way to Columbus for a convention I was a guest at (if you want a funny story that hates on Ohio State sometime, ask me about my impression of Columbus) and I took the time to take a good look at the campus again.

It was a night and day thing. The University of Michigan, when it wants to be, can be a remarkably beautiful and striking place, and it's easy to understand during those times why alumni and fans have such a very high opinion of it.

Now if they could just beat the Spartans football team... all would be great again. :-P

That may indeed be true (I know many of Harvard's facilities, for example, are awful). But I was more referring to exposed wires and pooling water in the School of Informational Sciences, like it was when my sister visited. It was apparently another two years before the school decided to make permanent repairs.

I don't care if a building is old, but when it is clearly not in good shape, and nothing is done to fix it... that's a problem. I couldn't tell you where the problem was (either the school wasn't budgeting enough, or maintenance wasn't doing a good job, etc.), but it does not reflect well on a school regardless.

And no, I doubt Lloyd Carr had anything to do with it... but he is a sneaky, vindictive bastard, so you never know. :-)

                            • There was plenty that was frustrating about the game but the real thing that gets me is how we played in the last 4 minutes of the game. Trey Burke made it 63-60 with a 3 at the 4:12 mark. Momentum seemed to finally be in our favor.

                              However.....

They miss a 3, get the rebound and then miss another 3.

                              We head down and...

Smot (and I know he had a hell of a game) gets blocked on a lay-up that he should've tried to dunk. The guy is 6'9" and as far as I can recall, has yet to dunk in a game. I don't know why he goes up so soft. He can dunk in warm-ups so I think it's a mental block. If he goes up stronger, he most likely either gets the dunk, gets fouled or both. I'd rather see him fail trying than be a finesse player.

                              Failure #1

                              They miss a J.

                              Trey Burke misses a 3.

                              Failure #2

                              They miss a 3.

We have a dysfunctional time for a moment and Coach B calls a timeout.

We get Zack a good look but he misses another 3.

                              Failure #3

                              They turn it over.

                              Trey misses another 3.

                              Failure #4

                              We get the rebound

                              Trey misses another 3.

                              Failure #5

                              We get the rebound.

Smot turns the ball over on a somewhat unforced error.

                              Failure #6

                              Ballgame.

Other than Smot's softer than required lay-up attempt and Zack's 3, we never drove the ball. Never forced the issue. We were in the bonus. Why not try to cut the lead to 1? Cut the lead to 1 and see if Ohio wilts under the pressure.

                              It was driving me nuts.

I hope both Coach Beilein and Burke learn from this. They didn't have to get it all back at once. Trey's made big shots from the top of the key but he's also made great shots at the rim or dished off or drawn fouls. It seemed like we settled for the tougher opportunity.

Fortunately, we are going to have a much different looking team next year. McGary will command attention and will also be a good garbage bucket player. GR III has a bit of a post-up game as well and Nik looks to be the best long range shooter we've had in years.

I think TH Jr. and Smot will both work at being more effective with the dribble and I don't doubt that Burke will improve as well.

Hopefully, Horford will heal up and work on his game. He could be another rim protector along with Mitch. That was another element that was obviously missing off this team.

How pissed of most of us are is a testament to how far we've come but it's also obvious that there's still great room for growth.

I'm looking forward to see what happens.

                              • What a let down by UM. I'm truly disappointed. They had everything to play for and they laid an egg. They get blown out by OSU and now this. Got some work to do to catch up to the Sparties.
