A very complete list, Jon. Overwhelming actually. I was aware of maybe a third of the various approaches. I'm not particularly confident that the several types of vaccines or the multiple therapeutic approaches are going to do much to eradicate, let alone slow the community spread of SARS-CoV-2. So much we simply don't know about it and how the body responds when the virus is presented to it.

Vaccines and therapeutics aside - something that I think is a distraction with too many seeing these as the solution thereby avoiding having to take personal responsibility for protecting yourself - I view the conclusions being drawn by the available data, as well as the data reporting itself to be problematic. The complexity of the process of disease tracking has been highlighted by COVID. So have major faults in US systems designed to do this.

The US is unique in that it does not have a centralized system for data collection and reporting. It is decentralized with different data collection and reporting protocols for each state. A look at any of the major data collection and reporting organizations (e.g., John's Hopkins + multiple other University based public and private entities) reveals all of them will have caveats about how states report data using different criteria and protocols.

I'm also discouraged by the multiple interpretations coming from various public officials, authorities and experts. Everyone of them has a different view of what a particular data set means standing alone or with other data sets added to provide context. It's obvious none of these people want to take a definitive stance on what the data shows and what action should be prompted by it. Instead, we get these patch-work measures between states, counties and cities, even down to the street level when a city or county boundary runs through it. Nobody wants to be proven wrong. Here in S. FL, we see officials arguing with each other over actions taken or actions being considered.

At the risk of appearing to be dismissive of COVID-impact and in light of my distrust of the data and how it is being interpreted by "experts", such distrust based on how wrong the experts have been along the way, I'm supporting these positions:

(1) C-19 disease impact - the burden of disease if you will - is substantially less than we are led to believe by the interpretation of the data at hand.
(2) State and local leadership should actively and vocally resist and by their pubic statements, balance press interpretations of rising case #s.
(3) Official messaging must be clear and unambiguous. This would include enumerating positive actions already being undertaken and their impact, stressing the risk of mitigation measures such as shuttering of businesses and schools that have a greater negative social and economic impact than potential benefit in disease containment at this point in time. List the multiple reasons for decreased disease burden. They include less vulnerable cohort among new case numbers, better disease management to include emerging therapeutics and standards of care, improved behaviors of vulnerable cohorts.
(4) Here in the US, we can achieve a manageable circumstance mostly through citizens taking responsibility for themselves - limiting personal mobility if at risk, masking and distancing - and enforcing compliance with locally established mitigation measures. We have to learn to live with this thing while continuing to support initiatives to strengthen employment and business activity.

Jeff, you're ignoring the ramifications of the public attitude. Yes, part of it is the media, but the media is going to always portray the worst case scenario until we figure this out. View the news through that lens. I spoke of Japan up thread, look at Canada which is culturally closer to us. The other day the US had over 60,000 new cases, Canada had a little over 200. Attitude is huge. As in any liberal democracy, a certain portion of the American population will act chaotically just for the sake of being chaotic. But here, a segment is intentionally promoting stupidity, putting innocent people at risk. Not wearing a mask is so counterproductive, healthwise. How come these jackasses don't take their guns and storm their statehouses over seat belts? Gotta wear those for the safety of self and others. TYRANNY!!!! The worst of it all is trying to make it a political issue. I wish my life was so carefree that my biggest worry was the godless, communist, gun grabbing, librul, Constitution repealing, leftist, antifa, schweinhunds trying to make me wear a mask/yellow star on my forced march to socialist Berniestan.

Our County Sheriff said last night that he will not dispatch deputies to enforce Gretch's face mask laws. Seems people have been calling 911 asking police to come arrest those who are not wearing masks. The Sheriff says those complaints should be forwarded to the Governor's office, or to the Attorney General. He says he cannot spare the manpower to respond to face mask complaints because there are other more serious matters to attend to.

I wear a mask when I go out in public, and I think its a good idea for everyone to continue to wear masks. But, I also understand why the Sheriff has made the decision that he made. He can't have his deputies running willy-nilly all over the county, looking for someone who didn't wear a mask to the 7-11. He'd rather be out looking for bad guys who are selling poison to kids, beating their wives, and stealing other people's stuff.

But, in some circles, my opinion on that is 'racist' so I guess I better be careful whom I say that to.

Police should only be used to enforce mask mandates. Social workers and interventionalists can handle the murders, rapes, burglaries, etc.

Is that sheriff's position that NO tickets will be issued? He claims a manpower issue - I call bullshit. His county is not writing ANY tickets (civil, vehicle, whatever) due to manpower, right? He doesn't get to choose which laws are enforced. He would be serving the public better if he chose to not write parking tickets and to write mask violations. (911 operators should tell callers masks are not a 911 issue. If 911 is forwarding mask calls to the police dispatch, that's a 911 problem.)

Any sheriff that chooses to disregard a lawful directive from the governor regarding law enforcement, well, his resignation should be accepted immediately and he should be barred from future employment within law enforcement.
