  • Didn't know this one, not good,

Last Monday -- less than a week ago -- Shawn Burr was a free man. He saw his daughter's game, he came home, he made a shake with pomegranate seeds, something his wife had purchased at Costco.

Next day, he felt funny. His tongue developed red spots. "The seeds," he figured. He also was exhausted. He went to the doctor. While there, he began to sweat. They sent him to the hospital. Blood was taken. When another doctor said, "We need to check something," Shawn turned to his wife, Amanda, and said, "This isn't good news. Did you see his face?"

It wasn't good news. Burr, 44, was helicoptered from Port Huron to the University of Michigan Medical Center with a blood count that was as lopsided as a bankruptcy budget.

On Thursday, three days from the pomegranate shake, he underwent the first of 21 chemotherapy treatments for acute myeloid leukemia, a bone marrow cancer in which abnormal white cells attack normal cells like a 3-on-1 hockey rush.

Reports: Disease found in ex-Wing Bob Probert's brain tissue

        Associated Press

TECUMSEH, Ontario — Two newspapers are reporting researchers at Boston University have found a degenerative disease in brain tissue donated by former RedWings enforcer Bob Probert.
The NewYorkTimes and The Globe and Mail in Toronto reported on their websites Wednesday night that Probert had chronic traumatic encephalopathy when he died last July of heart failure at age 45. Probert played 16 seasons in the NHL and his 3,300 penalty minutes ranks fifth on the league's career list.

Officials from the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy tell the newspapers that Probert is the second hockey player from their program to exhibit the degenerative disease. Reggie Fleming, a 1960s enforcer who played before helmets became mandatory, also was diagnosed.

            • They weren't really looking for it until recently; now it's not just a general diagnosis but accompanied by specific characteristics. Good article here.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease that results in behaviors similar to Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

They even go so far as to suggest Lou Gehrig had this (CTE) instead of ALS

I'm about to die and this is my Jacob's Ladder

                      • I am praying for Shawn Burr. I met him and Gallant one day for lunch with this bud of mine who had a card shop. He would pay them to show up once in a while. Burr had a ton of jokes and was really cool

                          • Shawn Burr did some tv in place when Mickey was would be out, and some sports radio. I think Larry Murphy does a good job though I still think he looks like the 'joker' from Batman.
