No public school district should be appointing a pastor to make curriculum decisions or being solely responsible for choosing the books in the school library.

Are any of those three single-handedly responsible for choosing a school district's books? That's what Bible Thumper McGee was proposing...when she isn't busy calling the cops on actual librarians for being pornographers.
I don't object to a pastor serving on a school board. Under no circumstances should a clergyman have unilateral control over what is allowed to be read in public schools. You'd lose your mind if the school appointed an imam.

I think there is something in the US Constitution - Article 6 or something such - that is generally understood to mean keep the state and religion separated. Appointing a pastor to a public position where said pastor is deciding which books are in the library he manages at the public's expense would probably be a violation of that constitutional principle ..... but I'm not a constitutional scholar or lawyer.
Before I opened my yapper on this constitutional principle I did some reading about it. When article 6 was added, it was Jefferson that wrote about a wall between the church and the state. Unlike Europena nations at that time, the founders were trying to keep the Pope being elected president of the US. Llater the Supremes ruled that no religious tests should be required to hold public office. I'll acknowledge this is tricky stuff as the First Amendment gets involved in these discussions and Liney may be right in thinking there is nothing unconstitutional about hiring pastor Schmatz to be your local librarian.
For me, and obviously others here, I've got a problem with evangelicals - and I assume the pastor is one of those - deciding what literature is going to be held in a public library problematic. Whether or not hiring this guy to be a librarian is unconstitutional is probably debatable. By doing so, you're essentially putting an obvious religion based filter that is intended to exclude some of literature's best works. On balance that's just fucked up.

I also reported over the last two posts of mine that the news of Russian successes on the battle fields of Ukraine is dominating the media space - most specifically is the reporting of the continuation of the horrendous and unnecessarily destructive Russian bombardments... via air attacks, cruise missiles and artillery. I don't think it is sustainable so, Putin is looking for quick territorial gains and consolidation of them within the LNR and DNR (in total the Donbas) followed by Russian Defense Ministry's allegations of spectacular success. Wait one .....
A Russian-appointed mayor of a Russian occupied Ukrainian town was injured in an explosion on Sunday.
Andrei Shevchuk was appointed mayor of Enerhodar following the Russian army’s occupation of the town, Reuters reported.
Shevchuk is currently in intensive care following the attack, according to a report from Russia’s RIA news agency, citing a source in the emergency services.
Dmytro Orlov, who Ukraine recognises as mayor of the town said in a post on the Telegram messaging app:
"We have accurate confirmation that during the explosion the self-proclaimed head of the ‘people’s administration’ Shevchuk and his bodyguards were injured."
Enerhodar has a population of over 50,000 and many of the residents work at the two power plants located next to the town, one of which is the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power station in Europe.
Like I said, the Russians may win some more than they lose sum by virtue of their superiority in numbers and their brutality but the later begets powerful and sustainable Ukrainian resistance to occupation in the Donbas. Ukrainian resolve to, in the end, win this thing and drive the Russian occupiers out is without limits compared to Russian resolve and capacity to achieve and then hold the gains Putin has set out to accomplish.

Jeff: There is an adage that "bad cases make bad law...." If what this Hixonbrough guy says is true about the lady trying to prosecute the librarians, then she qualifies as a nut, which is why she is presented by the leftists here as someone "representing" evangelicals.
The phrase "separation of church and state" is not found in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. If the Founders had wanted to, they could easily have included a “wall of separation.” The Founders wanted to create something new, real religious liberty, without state overreach and control. They said that Congress could not establish a national church, nor could it prohibit the free exercise of religion.
And that “free exercise of religion” isn’t just about “private worship” or “individualized faith,” it includes the freedom of individuals and different faiths to exercise belief in the public arena through their speech and actions. It is not "freedom from religion" which is the way Progs view it. If you haven't, listen to what the lady actually says. That is not nutty, she is just wrong.
The "why" this has become a contentious issue is because Marxism cannot survive if both religion and family are vital in a country. Roe was such a radical judicial decision because it directly contradicted Judeo-Christian teachings about murder. It also had the potential to degrade family life. It was a huge victory for the Marxists.
I'm against banning books. That is a far too slippery slope. However, I see nothing wrong with accommodating that part of the community that may be offended by a certain book given as an assignment in school. Certainly, an English teacher can find a book that is acceptable to most. When I was in high school, we were required to read one novel per week. The "short books" like The Pearl and The Old man and the Sea soon ran out, but we all read Candy and a few other short and dirty books. Our teacher was fine with that. Our small-town public library kept the dirty books under the Check-out desk, but we eventually figured that out too.
People today are too into cancel culture. If someone can explain to me what harm the Dr. Suess books do, I'd appreciate that.

The Constitution prohibits limiting or targeting a religion you’re offended by if it’s done by some sort of governmental or public entity. So whether you see anything wrong with doing anything you see fit, the Constitution definitely limits what can be done.
Just as it prohibits clergy from choosing public school curriculum.

In any event, it seems like everyone here is offended by book removals (not bans) that they disagree with and don’t mind the ones they agree with. Par for the course.
I happen to like Slaughterhouse Five and I also like To Kill a Mockingbird which has been “banned” (removed) for very progressive reasons.

Finally, I don’t think we’re talking book bans. We’re talking, most the time, curriculum choices and less often what books are in a school library. I’m not aware of anything where schools or other local authority is prohibiting certain books from being read.
A school may not teach Harper Lee or Vonnegut, but they ain’t stopping anyone from reading them.
And meanwhile, we’re humming along at 8% inflation that is probably going to take a recession to stop.
