  • Yeah, I was doing 3 things at once and skimming through that conversation initially. It seems those two things would be mutually exclusive.

    • Well since now any random immigrant can be a White supremacist and we are a "national of immigrants", it does stand to reason that it's a White Supremacist country now.

You can retire that one. It's as irrelevant as Nebraska football.
Yes, that poll always (seemingly) indicates that a majority of the country thinks we're on the wrong track. There is a spectrum, however, and 71% is historically bad.

From the NBC link that prompted this discussion: We have never before seen this level of sustained pessimism in the 30-year-plus history of the poll.

Try as you might, you can't just make this stuff go away with a wave of the hand.

        • BTW want to hear a fun fact? The guy in the picture above supposedly told authorities that he did actually intend to overthrow the government when he crashed his truck into the White House barriers (with nothing in the truck but a Nazi flag, which the arresting officers neatly laid on the ground for the news cameras LOL). All of his charges except for one charge of "depredation of property of the United States in excess of $1,000" have been mysteriously dropped.

No charges of treason, despite an actual admission that he was committing treason. Fascinating, huh?

Yeah, that's the thing. The Right/Wrong direction polls usually do show a pretty pessimistic average, but it's really in the toilet now.

            • Setting aside cultural sideshows like trans shit, the real issue of massive importane is simply: equality vs equity or equality of opportunity vs equality of outcome and, then, the role government plays in achieving the chosen objective. That's it.

Equity is fueled by the bullshit notion that the US is a "white supremacy" country. When asked to prove up any of this in 2023, the only conceivable way to do it is to point to outcomes. So, if you hold on to this nonsensical notion that the US is a white supremacy country that still, literally, implements not only Jim Crow, but Jim Crow ON STEROIDS!!! then this is the only position you can take.

Most people prefer equality of opportunity. We recognize that opportunities aren't uniformly equal and that they vary mostly dependent on wealth. Most don't mind accounting for that. Most mind, greatly, giving a black kid of doctors a leg up over a white kid from poor single-parent household in Monroe County.

And this is the fight that really matters because equity NECESSARILY means eliminating merit. And that'll be disastrous. And not only is disastrous writ large, it's also massively condescending to the very folks Progs want to help -- telling black folks, "nah, man, you can't compete on merit grounds." Again, the Progs consistent approach is to infantalize AAs (or anyone else) into needing the benevolent helping hand of the esteemed elite.

Progs can go ahead and choose their doctors and surgeons and financial advisors by the Alphabet Letters. Most of us prefer to do it based on merit.

This is the actual fight that matters. Soon, the Supreme Court should strike at least a small blow in favor of commonsense.

Well, they're only not mutually exclusive if you're actually a white supremacist.

                • Half the country will always say wrong track out of pure partisanship. Then there's usually enough dissatisfied people within the President's own party willing to be honest and be negative too. Leads to near-permanent negative majorities. I looked for older versions of the same poll and in early 2019, with the economy booming and well before covid and race riots, 63% were saying wrong track.

People also almost always view their personal situation better than the mood in general too.

I think that this is a mischaracterization of the approach. And the reality is more nefarious. It's not that they are telling minorities that they can't compete on merit grounds -- it's that they are telling them that White people won't let them because Whites are evil, and the only way to remedy the situation is to turn White people into second class citizens and decriminalize violence and discrimination against them (which is precisely what has happened). Their actual world view is that Wakanda is real and sub-Saharan Africa would have had spaceships visiting the stars had the colonizers not come in and stolen it all.

That makes some sense because "am i doing well" and "is the future of the country bright"? are two separate questions. People can sense a long term existential crisis, even if it doesn't affect them in the moment. That's most of what the Culture War stuf really is.

Hispanic unemployment is down to 4% and 0.1% from tying the record low.

Labor force participation among prime age women (25-54) is now at an ALLTIME high. On the other hand prime age participation for men is still a little short of 2019 levels.
