      • I'd normally think of myself as a voter with a diverse set of interests, but I'm down to climate change, basically. Other things are going to have to wait. As a climate-change voter I wholeheartedly endorse the declaration of a national emergency for reasons far flimsier than climate change.

And, given the complexity of big-ticket infrastructure, I'm absolutely certain that this administration won't be able to properly spend what's allocated. They won't even have the time to do it, and anything rushed will soon become a dilapidated symbol of waste.

but there is the rub, what is the difference between the polling numbers of those that support increased border security VS those that support the continued flow of illegals into this country, and treating them better than our own veterans and homeless population? In that theoretical, 0bama and the dems would have suffered GREATLY at the ballot box. I just don't see the overwhelming disapproval with border security.

It wouldn't have just been me that lost my mind, and they would have felt it.

            • I would say we can walk and chew gum at the same time, but after watching Congress, I would disagree with the notion. Either way, first you stop the flow. If I am in a row boat, and water starts flowing in from a hole, I am going to address the hole before bailing water. I want the stiffest possible penalties, but more than that I want the flow to cease.

and to your first point, correct. We didn't need a Donald J Trump as president for that to be the case, that has been the case since it's passage. and btw, there was nothing stopping 0bama from declaring a national emergency for humanitarian aid centers for illegals, other than the blowback. And he really didn't need to, because he was releasing them into our country's interior. I would have preferred centers to house them while they await trial, then deportation. Instead we got catch and release, which makes me more angry than your hypothetical.

I do not know the number that do it now (use the Border Card). I do know that number will go up as other routes become more difficult. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me to see Mexico hand these cards out like a Vegas barker handing out flyers for a show on the Strip. Do you put it past them?

They are coming here for jobs. And the US businesses that hire them are more than happy to oblige them because there is much more reward than risk. Putting real teeth to penalties for those companies who hire them and tightening or eliminating Federal assistance for illegals would remove the motivation to make the trip in the first place.

But we won't do it, because we (the monied people and businesses) actually want them here.

well yeah they want cheap labor, look how many Rs voted the other way today, the donor class wants illegal immigration. It is why many Republicans have been as bad as democrats on this issue, and it's why I voted for an outsider. this is my single issue. and it will never matter how many porn stars he cheated on his wife with, what stupid shit he says, as long as he continues to put this country above all others and the interests of the American people over the special interest donors, i will never abandon him, and neither will the rest of the base.

this will continue to be a shitshow, and i think the best way to pass meaningful legislation on immigration is by taking the wall off the table. worth a shot

Yeah. I can absolutely see a Dem President declare climate change a national emergency.

                        • Ongoing situation but it seems that some sick piece of shit just shot a bunch of people at a mosque in New Zealand and may have live-streamed the whole thing.

PM Jacinda Ardern condemns the "terrorist attack" in Christchurch, which was live-streamed by a gunman espousing far right, anti-immigrant views.

                          • Good Lord. Chirstchurch police believe there are multiple shooters at two different mosques. Could even be three or more people involved. The local newspaper is reporting that shots have been fired at the hospital where victims were taken and it's currently under lockdown.
