FORUM POSTING RULES - Read before posting

Forum Rules.

(1) The guiding principle for posting in this forum is moderate yourselves.

(2) Don't write a post that attacks, impugns or denigrates another poster's character. There's an obvious difference between the language of humor and hateful, debased language. Know the difference and post accordingly.

(3) This is a Michigan sports forum. The forum welcomes posts from M's sports rivals. Talking smack, posting sass is what college sports rivalries are all about. Rules (1) and (2) above apply. If you don't want to view the posts of a rival talking smack or sassing, use the ignore feature in User Controls.

(4) This forum is about sharing thoughts, ideas and viewpoints about all sports, any number of subjects and issues, learning stuff from other posters and having fun. There are threads by subject matter within the forum for doing this. Keep the threads on point.

NB: The rules above are not intended to build a case to ban a poster. There are consequences for rule breaking as specified below. That's as far as it should go. Only the most egregious and persistent rule breaking would cause the moderators to consider a ban.

Due Process.

(1) The forum has 6 moderators. Jeff Buchanan, Jon, JD, Hannibal, Oracle, Entropy. None of them want to moderate adult posters who should know better. There may be posts that break the rules.

(2) Posters who, at the sole discretion of a moderator, break a rule will be given a warning post that will site one of the rules listed above as the reason for the deletion.

(3) If the rule breaking behavior continues, a moderator can remove an offending post and any ensuing post that whines about that action. If a moderator removes a post(s) the reason for the removal(s) will be posted with the removal notice that appears in the thread. This should be the end of it. Man up, take responsibility for breaking the rules. The forum moves on. If not, see below.

(4) A poster who has had a warning or a post(s) removed can certify a question by PM to any moderator about that action. Do not complain about the action or attempt to make your case in the forum/threads. Moderators shall do their best to address the question within 72h. At the end of 72h the majority opinion of the moderators responding will be the answer.

(5) Banning a poster for egregious and repeated rule breaking requires a unanimous vote to ban from all 6 moderators. We don't anticipate this will ever happen.

Supposedly he has an on-line manifesto.
Yeah, I haven't (and won't) read his manifesto or see the horrific video (which was live-streamed on Facebook apparently) but everything I'm running across from people who've seen both say the shooter's a neo-nazi/white nationalist. Still unclear if he had help or if he was just able to get around quite a bit before being caught.

      • It'll be interesting to see how the Rs and PDJT get blamed for the New Zealand tragedy.

Meanwhile, Beto may have been Beto when he was running against Ted Cruz, but now that he's running in the D Primary he's just Robert Francis -- too white, too male, too privileged: https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-un...f-beto-orourke and https://www.huffpost.com/entry/beto-...b038892f4b15ec and https://www.washingtontimes.com/news...ps-white-male/

          • Speaking of executive overreach on a smaller scale, Governor Newsom has decided to ignore California's death penalty. He has said that he will commute every death sentence that comes up during his term without exception. That shits on the legislature, courts and popular will (via ballot referendum). Gavin's word is the law, apparently.

              • In NZ, 1 in 4 own a firearm. There were 14 gun murders (out of 35) in the whole country last year. NZ requires a criminal background check, a mental health background check, a notarized statement as to the.purpose of owning a firearm, 3 references from non-family attesting to character, secure storage of the firearm, and a police visit inspecting the secure storage. And no gun registration. IMHO, these are reasonable actions that up until yesterday were highly effective. It also demonstrates that no matter what you do, evil will occasionally raise its ugly head no matter the precautions.

                  • Wake up to find 49 people dead in the New Zealand terrorist attack. Horrible. Police did in fact find several IEDs in cars but were able to safely dispose of them. 4 people in custody (they had enough guts to massacre unarmed people huddling in corners but not shoot it out with the police).

This is a good article in explaining the particular subculture this guy came from among the Alt Right. A lot of what's in his 'manifesto', even the fact that he left a manifesto, should not be taken at face value and is just there to bait and troll people.

Someone could probably write a quality post about the dangers of irony and coming to legitimately believe in the things you once found ironic. It's part of this subculture to post horrible things like Holocaust jokes, admiration for Hitler, this or that group needs to die, etc etc. with the intention of riling people up. Some people start off treating it like a joke as a form of teenage nihilism...but then the more they research their material and hang out with like-minded people, suddenly they aren't doing it as a joke anymore.

                      • Obama is a pretty good comparison with Beta. Beta was credibly Hispanic enough in his background to ride identity politics to a very narrow 3-point loss to incumbent Ted Cruz. Remember that Cruz walloped Trump in the primary in that state and Trump won it by nine points. Cruz won his first election by 16 points. Beta also has that ability to energize his base without being entirely off-putting to people in the center. Like Obama, he is a blank enough slate to continue the agenda of Stealth Socialism, and the media will bend over backwards to protect him in case something controversial in his past (like Obama vis-à-vis Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright) pops up. I don't think that the country is quite ready for a She Guevara type candidate so 8 years of Stealth Socialism is still the optimal strategy for the Democortez party. By 2028, after another 10 years of demographic change, the antibodies will be completely overwhelmed and the Left will achieve final victory.

It's hard to tell how much of Cruz's close race is due to changing demographics, how much is due to Beto, and how much is due to Cruz being highly unlikable and that he spent most of his first term self-promoting and grandstanding.

                            • I know that Cruz is unlikeable, but his agenda seems to have been in line with what Texans want, for the most part. I don't otherwise think of him as being an easily defeated incumbent. Is he more unlikeable than he was when he won his seat the first time by sixteen points? I don't know. At any rate, If Beta gets the nomination, I think that he wins. If I was a Dem, he'd be the guy that I want. Biden doesn't scare me. Neither do Booker, Harris, or Bernie.

                              • The only Clinton state that Trump has a shot at winning is New Hampshire. I still think Biden has the best chance at flipping Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin back to Dem states. And that's all the Dem needs to do, even if NH flips.
